WWE: Why Brock Lesnar Will Defeat Triple H at SummerSlam

Tom ClarkJul 12, 2012

Because John Cena beat him at Extreme Rules.

That’s what you said, when you saw the headline of this column, right?  Well, so did I.

It does seem in many ways to be a foregone conclusion that Brock will come out on top against Triple H, in a bout that is likely to take place at WWE SummerSlam.

After all, the Next Big Thing has worked only one match since his return a few months ago, and one has to wonder why he is 0-1 in the first place.

Because he worked John Cena.  Duh.

Okay, I’m making this one way too easy for you, I know.  But, I’m all about keeping it simple.

And, simple is the notion that Lesnar cannot lose his second match back.  In fact, it only makes sense.

This is the monster Brock Lesnar, we’re talking about here.  The War Machine, the former UFC Champion, the beast who walked into two different companies and became the centerpiece of each.

His physical prowess, his brute strength, combined with natural athletic ability, earned him a place in a WWE ring, and in the Octagon.  He is a freak, a guy who knew what he wanted, then went out and got it.

And, he lost his first match back in WWE.

It seemed crazy at the time, and it was somewhat of a  possible validation for many of John’s critics who say that he wins too often, and under circumstances in which he should not even be able to stay upright to begin with.

However, we should never forget that John is Vince McMahon’s top dog, his prime money maker. Every other WWE Superstar revolves around him, and he is the focus of the entire company.  That is reality.

But, the other reality is that his place in WWE is not lost on him.  He is a company guy, and he is all business.  If he had been told, “you’re doing the job to Brock,” I hardly believe that he would have refused.

For a top-tier talent like Cena, there is a real understanding about how the business works.  John is a pro after all, he’s not a kid anymore, and he has been around long enough to know that whatever is right for WWE is right for him.

In other words, he will do what is asked of him.  Period.

Despite how big, or how important he is to the overall success of WWE, I believe that if the gameplan had called for John to drop the pin to Brock, if the reasoning behind it had been logical and was part of a bigger picture, then he would have done it.

I for one do not see the massive ego that some fans see when they look at Cena.

But, I also believe that he does not want to look bad.  No matter who hates him or why, fans have to see that side of it, if they are to fully understand this situation.

John and The Rock had a war of words for an entire year.  Twelve months of trash talking, of questioning each other’s heart, commitment and even their love for the company that was set to pay them both very handsomely for their WrestleMania match, we as fans saw it all.

Some picked Cena to win the match, mostly for all of the reasons listed above, concerning who he is, and how he’s pushed as the company’s leading man.

However, for those of us out here who just could not imagine Rocky losing on the grand stage of WrestleMania, we already had a pretty good idea of what the outcome would be.

And, when the plan was presented to Cena, you can bet that he agreed wholeheartedly.  Again, he is all business.

But, when the same scenario played out again, this time with Brock Lesnar being the former WWE Superstar stepping up to challenge the face of the company, the fact is, the end would have to change.

To ask Cena to job to Rocky is one thing.  But to ask him to lose again, in the main event of the next pay per view, is just too much.

Now, it begins to look as though Cena is losing his grip, his place, at the top of the WWE mountain.  That could not happen.  Despite how many fans criticize John, or keep bringing up the “SuperCena” reference, it just could not happen.

And, according to the opinions of many of those same fans, Brock didn’t really care either way.  He was just there to get paid.

I find it rather humorous whenever we as a collective, sit back and believe that we can completely get into the head of a talent we do not know, a man who has a personality and motivations outside of the business, and conclude what he wants, and why he is there to begin with.

In Lesnar’s case, he just wanted the payday.  That’s it.

But, the issue I have with that sentiment is that Brock, though he has not been in WWE since 2004, is himself, a guy who understands how business works, and what it means to do whatever’s necessary to put the product over.

So, was the conversation perhaps had with Lesnar before Extreme Rules, explaining to him that yes, you’re going to do the job here, but we’re going to put you with Hunter, later, and you can go over then?

When I really think about it, he and Cena are in the same boat.  For John, who was fresh off the heels of losing to a huge name in Rocky, there had to be a comeback, a match in which Cena could get back on his feet, and reestablish himself as the Alpha Male of WWE.

And, for Brock, coming off of that loss to John, there is no other option than to win against Triple H. That’s just the way it is.

Of course, the match actually has to be booked first, and assuming it is, I believe that Brock will have his arm raised in the end.

But, you knew that from the headline, right?
