Bulls Rumors: Chicago Should Roll Dice on Sharp-Shooting Michael Redd
The Chicago Bulls are a complete joke on the offensive end.
With Derrick Rose still rehabbing a torn ACL, they’re in desperate need of a scoring boost. Michael Redd possesses the ability to provide just that.
Chris Tomasson of FOX Sports reported that the Bulls are interested in acquiring Redd with Ronnie Brewer on his way out of Chi-Town and Kyle Korver’s status up in the air.
To many fans, it may be news that Redd is still in the NBA. But even at 32 years old, if healthy, he has plenty left in the tank.
Redd didn’t get much playing time on the Phoenix Suns last year, but when he did, he took full advantage of it. His 8.2 points per game isn’t impressive until you look at the fact that he only played 15.1 minutes a contest. That equates to 21.7 points per 40 minutes which is 1.8 points fewer than what he averaged when he was an All-Star and named Third-Team All-NBA back in 2004.
According to John Hollinger of ESPN, Redd finished this past season with a player efficiency rating of 14.0. Comparatively, Richard Hamilton recorded a PER of 13.3, Korver 13.6 and Brewer 12.3. Redd definitely wouldn’t be a downgrade at the position and even if he only supplies a minimal boost, his low salary would provide superior value to the Bulls in 2012.
Paul Coro of The Arizona Republic reported in December that Redd has signed a contract with the Suns for the veteran's minimum. There’s no reason to believe he’d demand anything higher this summer.
According to Hoopsworld, Hamilton and Korver are scheduled to make $5 million this season, and Brewer was set to earn $4.37 million. The vet-min is $1.05 million.
If the Bulls sign Redd, they’d be adding a player that’s capable of putting the ball in the basket at a discount price. They’d be hard-pressed to find a better value on the open market.
