UFC Flyweight John Dodson: Everything You Need to Know About a Rising Star
Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, John Dodson was an all-around athlete growing up.
He attended Moriarty High School in Moriarty, New Mexico, where he was a two-time state wrestling champion, a four-time district champion in track and a member of the football team.
After high school, Dodson turned down an offer for a wrestling scholarship out of state and chose to stay closer to home. He ended up attending the University of New Mexico while also holding down a job at a local Chuck E. Cheese.
Chris Luttrell, a black belt under Greg Jackson, spotted Dodson working during his son's birthday party. He was already familiar with Dodson's wrestling background. The fact he hadn't accepted a scholarship to a major university was rather shocking.
After a brief conversation, Luttrell invited Dodson out to Jackson's MMA in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
As with all newcomers, the first day was rough for Dodson, but he did manage to impress his teammates and coaches, particularly with a front flip to avoid a double leg takedown.
"The Magician" was born.
Dodson was offered a spot on Jackson's team, and in November of 2004, he competed in his first professional fight against top-ranked flyweight Yasuhiro Urushitani.
Things didn't go so well for the over-matched Dodson, who was defeated soundly by a much more experienced opponent.
Over the years, Dodson continued to improve in every fight, while showing a few growing pains along the way. His persistence and hard work finally paid off when he landed a spot on The Ultimate Fighter, Season 14.
"My mom taught me that you always have to be first with everything that you've gotta do," Dodson told UFC.com. "Be first, be smooth and be clean."
Dodson's mom would be one proud lady.
After knocking out Brandon Merkt to get into the TUF house, Dodson defeated three other opponents to win the show and earn a UFC contract.
