NBA Summer League 2012: Underrated Scorers Who Will Surprise Spectators

Ian HanfordJul 10, 2012

The NBA's Summer League separates the men from the boys. We have a pretty good idea of each NBA teams' star players, but these guys are just fighting to make the roster.

There are a lot of capable players out there. I'm not saying you're going to find the next LeBron in Summer League play, but there's some talent between elite rookies and impressive NBDL performers.

Let's take a look at three underrated scorers in this year's Summer League that will force you to pay attention.

Kim English

English was a second-round pick of the Pistons, but he doesn't score like one. His 6'6'' frame gives him the length to shoot over most guards and the height to get in the lane.

English was a vital part of Missouri's frenetic offense last season. He's a one-dimensional player, but he is a scorer through and through. Detroit was smart in adding him, and he will surprise their fans immediately.

He will earn himself a valuable bench spot by playing well this summer. His only job is to score, and he will do that very well.

Reggie Hamilton

How could I avoid the nation's No. 1 scorer from last season? Hamilton averaged nearly 26 points per game as the point guard for the Oakland Golden Grizzlies.

He did take nearly 18 shots per game, but Hamilton is fun to watch. If nothing else, he's a high-volume scorer who can go on white-hot scoring tears, but he's undersized (5'11'') and completely one-dimensional.

Hamilton will suit up for the Pacers. Indiana desperately needs scoring, and they will give Hamilton a chance to show them when he can do.

It takes a lot to score the way Hamilton did last season. Watching him translate to that play will be even more fun to watch.

Alex Young

Young is another small school product trying to earn his stripes with startling Summer League production. He will line up with the Sacramento Kings in his first year out of IUPUI.

Young's lanky 6'6'' frame gives him an advantage on the perimeter. He's a high volume shooter, but his percentages aren't great (42 percent from the floor, 34 percent from three).

His body gives him the chance to improve, and it's tough to deny anyone who averaged more than 20 points per game for an entire season. Young is a big-time scorer, and he hauled down nearly six boards per game.

He needs to work on his defense, but Young could find a role on an NBA team this summer.
