Natalie Coughlin's "SportsCenter" Video and Other Olympians Who Should Do a Spot

Darin PikeJun 7, 2018

Natalie Coughlin is gracing television sets across the United States with the latest installment of the "This is SportsCenter" series. While mixing in the typical humor, adding Coughlin in a swimsuit won't exactly upset the male viewership.

Fans of SportsCenter, swimming, the Olympics or just swimwear in general should take a few moments to watch the video

With all due respect to Coughlin and her accomplishments in the water, she also displays her talent in this clip. Kudos to ESPN for recognizing this and sharing with viewers.

For those who haven't seen the spot, please watch the link above. It features a leprechaun searching Coughlin's desk at ESPN on March 17. He is attempting to take her gold medals, but is thwarted by her.

We also would like to share some ideas for more Olympians who would be a great fit for an upcoming role.

Michael Phelps

1 of 5

Perhaps this is simply too obvious to ignore, but Michael Phelps needs to update his "It's just a bronze" coaster bit with Jay Harris.

Phelps has done updated commercial spots for SpeedoPowerBarVisa and Subway. While he may not have the acting skill Coughlin has sported, he'll likely make the female viewers happy.

I envision a game of blackjack in the break room, with Phelps playing against the combined team of Mark Spitz and Carl Lewis.

Instead of cards they could be dealing in Olympic medals. Spitz and Lewis would each have a nine, one for each of their gold medals, for a total of 18.

Phelps would show a hole card of his six gold medals from Athens, along with his eight from Beijing, and his line would be "I'll double down."

Phelps will be going for seven more gold medals in London, which would give him the unbeatable hand of 21.

Allyson Felix

2 of 5

While I won't pretend to understand the reasons for Jeneba Tarmoh surrendering her opportunity to compete in London, odds are that Allyson Felix's 15 minutes aren't up just yet.

Felix will compete in the 2012 Olympics following the remarkable tie, and a positive showing there will provide even more press to keep the story warm.

ESPN certainly has the opportunity to keep fans reminded of the finish.

I envision Felix pulling into the ESPN parking lot where she and Linda Cohn simultaneously start to park their cars in the same spot. Cohn would back out and give the nod to Felix.

Walking through the front door she and Hannah Storm could push the elevator button at the same time. When a car with just one spot open arrives, Storm will offer to wait for the next one.

The final take would show her and Chris Berman reaching for the last muffin in the ESPN break room. They both grab it at the same time, but Berman concedes the prize.

Ashton Eaton

3 of 5

For those who missed it, Ashton Eaton set a world record for the decathlon at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials. He had the encouragement of his competitors, who even surrendered their positioning in the 1,500-meter final to avoid disrupting his final push.

The feat also was witnessed by former Olympic greats Milt Campbell, Rafer Johnson, Bill Toomey, Bruce Jenner and Dan O'Brien, who were on hand in Eugene, Ore., to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the decathlon's inclusion in the modern Olympics.

Jenner and O'Brien would need to be a part of this bit, offering commentary as Eaton attempts to set a record for delivering 10 different pieces of mail. He would have different issues along the way that would require speed, jumping, hurdling and throwing.

The final bit would be needing a personal best to deliver an envelope to Office 1500. A few employees would move out of his way as he completed the effort.

Alex Morgan and Hope Solo

4 of 5

Alex Morgan has been receiving a lot of attention as of late for her contributions to the World Cup and Olympic soccer team. After—well, if the women win the gold medal in London, her exposure will only increase.

Granted, this wouldn't be the first time Morgan appeared on a SportsCenter commercial with Hope Solo, but their initial segment with the Miami Dolphin mascot fell a bit flat.

It is hard to imagine Morgan being more exposed than her Sports Illustrated swimsuit appearance where she sported a painted-on bikini, but ESPN would be happy to try.

The options here are plenty and obvious, but would be fun to see all the same. She could be walking through the studio dribbling a soccer ball, when someone needs a light turned off. One swift kick, and the ball flips the switch.

When Lisa Guerrero wants a Diet Coke (cross-sell opportunity!), Morgan could do an overhead throw-in with a dollar coin, and then kick the ball to make the beverage selection.

The can would fly out of the machine and Morgan would one-time it toward Guerrero. That is where Solo would step in to catch the can just in front of a startled sideline reporter.

"Nothing gets by me," would be Solo's contribution to the piece.

Jordyn Wieber

5 of 5

Jordyn Wieber will be making a push for Olympic gold by virtue of her talent, amazing balance and incredible strength.

She needs to demonstrate some of these skills for the cameras at ESPN.

Wieber should sport a janitor's uniform retro-fitted into a gymnastics leotard. She would be able to perform normally mundane, yet tricky tasks with great ease.

The spotlight that needs to be changed? No need for a ladder—Wieber can simulate her floor routine and do a two-and-a-half back-flip to the ceiling, curling her knees over the bar and replacing the bulb.

This could lead into a simulated uneven bars routine to change a gel above Berman.

The balance beam would come into play to rescue a mascot from a balcony, while she'd need to vault her way to a ledge to remove Erin Andrews' image from a wall mural.

Perhaps ESPN would like to tinker with that last idea—it could be too soon.

Berman would need to finish the segment with the comment, "She really can do it all, can't she?"
