Hope Solo Given Public Warning by USADA for Positive Drug Test
The U.S. national women’s soccer team was given some surprising news on Monday.
The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency has issued goalkeeper Hope Solo a public warning after testing positive for the outlawed substance Canrenone in a urine test administered on June 15.
Today’s news has no effect on her ability to play in the Olympic games, and Solo made it sound like it was nothing more than a mistake (via USADA.org):
"I took a medication prescribed by my personal doctor for pre-menstrual purposes that I did not know contained a diuretic. Once informed of this fact, I immediately cooperated with USADA and shared with them everything they needed to properly conclude that I made an honest mistake, and that the medication did not enhance my performance in any way.
"
The United States Anti-Doping Agency classifies Canrenone as a Specified Substance, which means Solo isn’t in danger of losing her spot on the team. The U.S. Soccer team fully backs Solo’s response in a statement of its own.
The 30-year-old has been one of the catalysts for the women’s recent success in international play. She was incredible in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which ended in a gold medal for her team.
Last year, the U.S. women’s team was a few penalty shots short of winning the women’s World Cup, with Solo defending the goal. There is no question she is one of the premier women’s keepers in the entire world.
With Solo cleared to play, you can watch her in action July 25 against France in the women’s first match at the London Olympics.
