Anderson Silva: Should the Greatest Fighter of All-Time Consider Retiring?
UFC 148 was the most highly anticipated event in UFC history and not only did the card deliver, but so did the main attraction.
Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva went into Saturday night with one thing on his mind and that was finishing Chael Sonnen, and he did exactly that. Sonnen was finished by Silva in the second round by TKO, and now many MMA fans wonder what's next for "The Spider."
What is next? What's left? What hasn't Silva done? He's fought in two weight divisions, defended the middleweight championship a record number of times, and has finished 13 of his 15 UFC opponents.
Sure, Silva could jump up to light heavyweight and challenge Jon Jones for the championship, but what's the point? You're already the most dominant fighter in history; why risk at 37 years old moving up in weight and challenging a younger, much larger version of yourself?
Coming off possibly the most satisfying win of his career and at 32-4, should Silva consider going out on top and calling it a career?
I believe he should. There is honestly nothing else he can accomplish in the middleweight division and moving up to light heavyweight just seems like it presents more risk than reward.
The 40-year-old Cung Le said last night following his first UFC win, "I'm an adrenaline junkie and I'm not sure I can give it up yet." Could that be how Silva feels as well?
Only one man knows the answers to all these questions, and it appears Silva isn't ready to hang up his gloves, and as a fan, that excites me and makes me wonder: What else do you think Silva wants to accomplish?
Whether this was Silva's last fight or if he decides to fight for 10 more years, one thing is sure and that is each time Silva walks into the Octagon, we're witnessing the greatest fighter in MMA history perform.
