Silva vs Sonnen Results: Potential Opponents for the Spider After Convincing Win

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

Anderson Silva has nothing left to prove.

With that being said, the pressure on UFC President Dana White to continue to line up fights for the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world continues to mount.

Chael Sonnen was the obvious choice as heir to The Spider's throne, especially considering the hell the Oregonian put Silva through two years ago. But the 37-year-old was having none of that this time around, as he finished Sonnen with a knee to the chest and subsequent punches for the second-round TKO.

With arguably the biggest rivalry in the UFC now over, and Silva now having defended his middleweight title 10 times, there aren't a whole lot of options.

In order for White to find the best possible fight, he's going to have to scroll down the middleweight rankings or force some fighters to make a weight they don't want to make.

Let's take a look at the best possible options for Silva's next fight.

Mark Munoz/Chris Weidman

If Silva is going to go up against a current middleweight fighter, the options aren't sexy.

Munoz is currently ranked third in the middleweight division by ESPN, but after having to draw out of his potential fight with Sonnen, he doesn't have a marquee win under his belt, despite sitting at 12-2 in his MMA career.

The fringe contender has a chance to change that on Wednesday when he takes on Chris Weidman.

Weidman has just four UFC fights in his career, but if he finds a way to put away Munoz, he'll easily jump the rankings as he continues to prove he is the best up-and-coming middleweight fighter.

Munoz-Weidman should just be touted as "Who Gets to Lose to Silva Next?"

Georges St. Pierre

Now we have to start looking into other divisions, at least if we are looking for fights we want to see. There are obviously more likely contenders in the middleweight division, but as far as appeal, we need to look elsewhere.

St. Pierre is a comfortable 22-2, and he hasn't lost since 2007. The 31-year-old Canadian has defended his Welterweight title six times in a row since getting his revenge on Matt Serra.

Silva vs. St. Pierre is the fight everyone wants to see, even if they have to wait for Rush to fully recover from his knee injury and get back in shape.

The Spider's reach is only about an inch-and-a-half longer, so if they found a way to meet somewhere in the middle in terms of weight, it could work.

Jon Jones

If Silva vs. St. Pierre is a long-shot, then Silva vs. Jones is a pipe dream.

The 24-year-old Jones, who is currently the light-heavyweight champion and an impressive 16-1, would certainly provide plenty of intrigue in a fight against Silva, but the odds of it ever happening are slim.

Not only is there a 20-pound difference, but Jones' reach is about seven inches longer than Silva's. It would be very hard to make that work.

Nonetheless, if Jones beats up Dan Henderson in September, you can rest assured the Silva-Jones talk will gain plenty of steam, no matter how unlikely it is.

Possibly a more likelier opponent out of the light-heavyweight division would be Rashad Evans, who would be more willing to go down in weight and has a much shorter reach.
