Robert Guerrero Wins a Hard-Fought Decision Against Aydin, Ready for Mayweather?
Robert Guerrero (30-1-1, 18 KO) has won his welterweight debut Saturday night by unanimous decision against Selcuk Aydin (24-1, 17 KO).
According to reports from respected journalist Dan Rafael on Twitter, Guerrero won by scores of 117-111, 116-112 and 116-112.
Aydin landed the harder shots, including some impressive uppercuts, but Guerrero was the much busier fighter. Guerrero was able to keep Aydin off him with a lot of activity even as he began to fade in later rounds.
Guerrero worked hard, but has shown he doesn't have a lot of power at this weight after competing under a 140 pounds for the majority of his career.
He's seeking to be the comeback opponent of choice for the WBC welterweight champ in Floyd Mayweather (43-0, 26 KO) when the champ returns from jail.
There's speculation Mayweather will want a return match this fall. Guerrero's win over Aydin makes him the interim WBC champ. If Mayweather doesn't face him, Guerrero could be promoted to full champion.
With that in mind, Mayweather may come for his belt and Guerrero better be ready. This performance, while impressive, is not enough to convince me at this time that he can beat Mayweather.
