Stevie Johnson's Song 'Run It Back' Should Be His Last Song

Erik FrenzJun 3, 2018

Sports and hip hop culture are tied together in a lot of ways. Famous rappers wear jerseys of their favorite players and baseball hats sporting the logo of their hometown team. Athletes often try to enter the hip hop world either during or after their playing days.

So when word spread of Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson's "Run It Back" featuring Game, it wasn't met with much surprise from this blogger. And being a fan of hip hop usually makes such discoveries a welcome treat.

More like trick-or-treat, the result of which is dependent on what happens after you push play.

This time, it's trick.

The rhymes don't rhyme, the hook is unoriginal and redundant, the flow isn't smooth and the lyrics just aren't good. It's really too bad, too, since Game's verse is as incredible as we've come to expect out of him.

It's understandable that Johnson isn't very good. Johnson isn't a rapper; he's an athlete, and a pretty good one. He's also probably just having fun. It's a slow time of the NFL offseason, with training camps still more than three weeks away for most teams, the Bills included, so it's not like this is ruining his offseason regimen.

But rapping, just like being an athlete, requires a set of skills that are learned and mastered over a long period of time. Rappers don't think they can become an athlete overnight; why do athletes think they can become rappers?

It's not the one-off rap songs that I'm talking about, either. It's the attempts to create a side project out of rapping as Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson has done in starting Jaccpot Records and setting a record release for late summer (according to The Philly Post).

One song is just fine, but let's stop short of calling this a career endeavor. Sorry, Stevie, but stick to catching touchdowns and leave the hip hop to Game.
