NBA Free Agency Rumors: Breaking Down Best Fits for Knicks PG Jeremy Lin

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

Jeremy Lin is in an ideal spot as NBA free agency gets underway. The star point guard had a brilliant two-month stretch this season and is going to parlay that into a huge multimillion-dollar contract from a team somewhere.

Despite not knowing where Lin will play, he is going to have his share of suitors. All he has to figure out is where his talents will best be utilized.

Basing this on the report from ESPN's Chris Broussard, which cites a source saying that "Toronto, Dallas and Brooklyn have all expressed interest in Lin," as well as the Knicks, who are going to be in the mix, we will break down the best spot for Lin to play.

Toronto Raptors

I like the idea of Lin in Toronto. He is the kind of exciting, difference-making scorer this franchise desperately needs. Pairing him with 2012 Draftee Terrence Ross would give the Raptors a dynamic backcourt, though there would not be a lot of shots to be had for anyone else.

That might not be such a bad thing, since there is not a lot of scoring on the team as it is. This is a case where I think the Raptors need the player more than the player would need/want them. A nice fit but not ideal.

Dallas Mavericks

For an aging Mavericks team, Lin strikes me as the shot in the arm that this franchise needs. The team's attention is likely to be elsewhere until Deron Williams makes his decision, but Lin would be a nice fallback option.

Always known for boasting a fast-paced offense with a strong point guard, the Mavericks fell apart last year. Jason Kidd was solid, though it was obvious how much he has slipped in his old (by NBA standards) age.

Lin would be a strong fit with Dirk Nowitzki in this offense if things don't work out with that other point guard.

Brooklyn Nets

I really don't know what the Nets are doing. I know what they want to be doing, but there are so many obstacles standing in the way of it that it is hard to keep everything straight.

Lin would be a nice marketing tool for the Nets to build their franchise around. I am just not sold on him as being the piece that this team needs to win games on the court. He needs help in a lot of different areas to be a great player, and the Nets don't have that kind of team right now.

If the Nets want to make a play for Lin, I can fully understand it. But beyond marketing him to a mainstream audience, I don't see a strong fit.

New York Knicks

If the Knicks believe that Lin is the best point guard for them—I believe he is—they will convince him to stay even with their limited financial resources.

Some things will have to change with the way the offense is run, namely Carmelo Anthony stops shooting 20-25 times per game. Lin and Anthony make a very good scoring tandem, though it won't do much on the defensive end.

If Anthony, Lin and Amar'e Stoudemire can figure out how to play together, the Knicks could be a very exciting team. I don't know how good they will be relative to the best the Eastern Conference has to offer, but we will all tune in to see.

They are still the best fit, all things considered, for Lin at this point in his career.
