Spain vs. Italy: Azzurri Must Build on Excellent Euro Tournament

Timothy RappJul 2, 2012

When Italy and its fans look back upon the 2012 European Championships, the temptation might be to dwell on the 4-0 beatdown they suffered against Spain in the final.

That would be a mistake. The Italians took huge strides at this tournament, and if they can build upon this result—and continue to grow in the new-found attacking philosophy they thrived in—they'll be serious contenders at the 2014 World Cup.

Sure, Spain will still be the favorites, a German squad with its key players in their prime will have a chip on its shoulder and Brazil will be difficult enough to deal with without the advantage of hosting the tournament.

But Italy proved that it has embraced the new style brought by Cesare Prandelli. Mario Balotelli proved he could thrive on the biggest stages, while Antonio Cassano proved he could be trusted.

That pairing complemented each other well at the striker positions. Cassano provided energy and the ability to set up teammates, while Balotelli showcased his combination of size and elite athleticism that makes him so dangerous when he is at his best.

The diamond in the midfield worked to perfection as well. Andrea Pirlo was an absolute maestro from the deep position, supporting the back line while orchestrating the attack forward from his holding position.

Meanwhile, Riccardo Montolivo was very good atop the diamond, aiding the Italian attack with crisp passing and excellent vision.

Throughout, Italy's movement and willingness to press forward was fun to watch. There were disappointments—like the tie to Croatia and failing to score a goal in regulation time against England despite dominating the game—but those moments were negated by the team's impressive 2-1 defeat of Germany.

And that is the game that not only the fans but this Italian team should recall. That is the game the Italians showed a blend of solid defending, creativity moving forward and the ability of players like Cassano and Balotelli to do well with the opportunities presented to them.

So, forget that the Italians were outclassed in the first half against arguably the greatest team of all-time and that they were bound to concede goals when they dropped to 10 men in the second half.

Forget the image of Balotelli looking distraught and angry after the loss to Spain. Instead, remember him ripping off his shirt after his powerful strike and second goal against Germany.

Prandelli has this Italian side moving in the right direction. If they remain on course, they will be dangerous in 2014.

Hit me up on Twitter—my tweets want Dwight Howard to just get traded already, too.
