Gymnastics Olympic Trials 2012: Gabby Douglas and Jordyn Wieber Steal the Show

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

The United States Olympic gymnastics team is once again in good hands. Gabby Douglas and Jordyn Wieber both had terrific performances in the trials and will lead the team into London with a great chance of bringing home plenty of medals.

Douglas earned the only automatic berth to the Olympics by winning the two-day all-around event with a score of 123.450. Wieber finished a close second and was a virtual lock to make the team, making it only a formality when she was announced.

McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman and Kyla Ross rounded out the five-person team. It's lifelong dream come true for all of them, but Douglas and Wieber are the two that will be expected to lead the way.

It was the most complete performance of Douglas' career. While she was a part of last year's gold medal-winning team at the World Championships, she has really taken a step forward individually and appears to be rounding into form at the perfect time.

Her impressive run started at this season's Visa Championships, where she claimed the all-around silver medal, finishing only behind Wieber. It was a sign that the 16-year-old Virginia native could be a lot more than a supporting cast member.

She will now team with Wieber to give the United States a dynamic, and perhaps unstoppable, one-two punch heading into the Olympics.

Wieber has been the most dominant gymnast in the world over the past two years. She has claimed the all-around gold medal in last year's World Championships, the last two Visa Championships and American Cups as well as the 2012 Pacific Rim Championships.

In other words, she has been on quite a roll. Even though she was beaten by Douglas at the trials, it was by an extremely narrow margin and was still a good showing. If she's not the favorite in London, it would be quite a surprise.

As a tandem, they make the United States a formidable force in the team competition. Even though they are sure to receive a tough test from countries like China and Russia, anything less than first place would fall short of expectations that just keep increasing.

Douglas and Wieber don't have much time to celebrate their accomplishments, though. Action begins in London in just over three weeks, meaning there is limited practice time to work out the flaws before the moment of truth.

They may not be household names yet, but after their performance at the trials, it's only a matter of time before sports fans around the country know who they are.
