Jordyn Wieber: World Champ Will Lead USA to Gold in London
Olympic gymnastics hopeful Jordyn Wieber looks poised to take the top spot in the trials and eventually the gold for the U.S. in London.
While others struggled, Wieber had a strong showing on Friday and took one step closer from being a hopeful to a shoo-in for London 2012.
The winner of the all-around at the trials will earn a guaranteed spot on the women's team in London. Wieber looks well on her way to earning a spot after finishing at the top with 61.7 points two days ago. She even cruised through the uneven bars, which has been regarded as one of her main weaknesses.
The troubles she had in last year's championship seemed to fade. Her performance on the bars on Friday seemed effortless.
As the world champion in all-around and team in 2011, Wieber is expected to join a U.S. squad that will be in a solid position to contend for Olympic team gold.
Her aggressive style can work in her favor, and it will make her tough to beat if she performs consistently in London. So far, all indications are that her performance at the trials is a foreshadowing of how things will go down at the Olympics.
If Wieber can pull a gold in all-around at London, she'll be the first world champion to do so since Lilia Podkopayeva of Ukraine.
She'll make winning a gold look just as effortless as her performance in San Jose if she goes to London in her current state.
