NBA Rumors: Patient Approach Will Pay off for Sacramento Kings
Like all teams on draft day, the Sacramento Kings are listening to the phone for possible trades. However, the team is smart enough to remain patient and wait until it has more information.
The Kings have received offers from a number of teams, notably the Houston Rockets. According to David Aldridge, the team rejected a trade that would bring point guard Kyle Lowry and the No. 16 pick for the No. 5 pick and forward Chuck Hayes.
This seems like a good trade on paper, but the Kings are waiting to see their options.
Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! reports that Sacramento wants to see what players are available when it is the Kings' turn to draft. The team apparently loves Thomas Robinson and hopes that he is still on the board at No. 5.
Waiting until the draft starts might put more pressure on both front offices, but it gives them a better idea of what they are trading.
Robinson is a solid power forward out of Kansas that could be the second-best player in the draft. He enjoyed a breakout junior season this year and led his team to the finals of the NCAA tournament. Although he does not have ideal height for his position, Robinson's motor will allow him to succeed wherever he goes.
There are not many sure things after projected top pick Anthony Davis, but the Kansas forward is one of the safest picks in the class.
Still, it is entirely conceivable that Robinson falls to the Kings with the fifth pick. After Davis, there are a number of players with huge upside that teams would love to draft in the next three picks. This group of players includes Bradley Beal, Harrison Barnes, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Andre Drummond.
If these players come off the board in any order before Robinson, the Kings would be smart to take him.
Sacramento has been building a solid group of players through the last few drafts, but the team still needs another frontcourt player to pair with DeMarcus Cousins. The Washington D.C. native might be the missing piece.
However, if the coveted player is selected earlier, the Kings would be more than justified in trading the high selection. The team still has a lot of needs, and it would be helpful to acquire a veteran or more draft picks to help it in the future.
Either way, the important thing is to weigh the options and not rush into a decision. With this patience, the Kings are already in great shape going into the 2012 NBA draft.
