Texas A&M Football: Latest Summer News and Recruiting Updates

Randy ChambersJun 3, 2018

The Texas A&M Aggies are heading into the SEC with most of last year's team intact and a new head coach. They return a total of 14 starters, including eight on offense, and have many reasons to feel optimistic about their inaugural season in the SEC.

Last season, Texas A&M put together a fantastic recruiting class that included 20 talented players. We are not even in the month of July yet, and they have already received 22 early commitments for the 2013 class, making this a top five class early on.

With many other top players considering hopping on the bandwagon, here are some of the latest updates on the Aggies' team and recruits.

Dominic Walker Down to Three Schools

1 of 4

Dominic Walker, out of Orlando, FL, may be one of the more underrated wide receiver prospects in the country. He has a long frame at 6'2", 194 pounds, above average speed and terrific hands. He has no problems catching the ball in traffic and can go up and get it with the best of them. This kid has a bright future ahead of him, wherever he ends up.

"

"You want to look at the schools that make you feel needed. Walker said. Not to where they just talk to you. You want a school that makes you feel like you can make an impact. That’s what I’m looking for, playing right away."(Via The Orlando Sentinel).

"

The three schools that seem to be on Walker's radar are FSU, Vanderbilt and Texas A&M. The 4-star wide receiver says that the Commodores and Aggies are the two teams that are recruiting him the hardest, and he expects to have a decision within a week or two.

Two Players Suspended for a Game

We knew that Kevin Sumlin was a no-nonsense head coach, and he showed us that once again when he suspended both linebacker Steven Jenkins and defensive back Howard Matthews for the season opener. According to reports, it was for a violation of team rules.

Jenkins is entering his senior season and finished last year with 61 tackles. He is considered a top 150 SEC player heading into the 2012 season by Bleacher Report. Matthews played in every game last season for the Aggies as well, finishing the 2011 season with 28 tackles and two sacks.

Could these suspensions actually backfire on the Aggies, who have to travel to Shreveport, LA, to take on the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs?

Torrodney Prevot Leaning Towards a Deadline?

3 of 4

Torrodney Prevot is one of the better defensive ends in the country. At 6'4", 205 pounds, he gets off the ball extremely quick and wreaks havoc in the backfield. He is a sure tackler and can eventually develop into a playmaker at the college level.

The 4-star recruit out of Houston, TX, has offers from everyone from Oregon to Texas A&M, and may be leaning towards a decision in July.

"

"I am thinking about getting my commitment out of the way sometime before the summer," Prevot tells William Wilkerson of HornsNation on ESPN.com. "I have The Opening and I am going to Cal this Friday. Then I might go to USC next week or something like that. I'll probably make my decision next month."

"

Schools such as LSU, Texas A&M and Texas appear to be the front-runners right now.

Aggies Land Kyrion Parker

4 of 4

The Aggies are officially a part of the SEC now that they have stolen a recruit from a fellow rival. Wide receiver Kyrion Parker was committed to the LSU Tigers, before switching his commitment to the Texas A&M Aggies.

"

"I just sat down with my family, weighed every option and talked it out," Parker told GigEm247. "When we were done, everything pointed to Texas A&M, so I got it done today. I took a picture in my A&M shirt and then I sent a text message to Coach Sumlin asking him if it was ok for me to be an Aggie. Then, I called him later and he told me that's what he's been waiting to hear."

"

Parker was injured nearly his entire junior season of high school, which did not help him in the recruiting process. However, the 6'4", 200 pound receiver, quickly impressed coaches once he healed and transferred high schools. He quickly racked up offers from Arkansas, LSU, Texas Tech and Illinois, among others.
