NBA Draft Rumors: Sacramento Kings Should Not Select Damian Lillard at No. 5

Adam FromalJun 7, 2018

Sacramento Kings fans have it tough enough already. Now it's getting tougher, as a rumor is out that Kings management is actually considering using the No. 5 pick in the 2012 NBA draft on Damian Lillard.

Here's the source of the news, a tweet from DraftExpress' Jonathan Givony:

"

If Kings fans didn't need another reason not to jump off a cliff, there's lots of chatter Sac is considering passing on Barnes for Lillard.

This is in no way a criticism of Lillard as a prospect, but the Kings absolutely shouldn't consider drafting him. Not even for a second.

Lillard may be the top point guard prospect in the class and a potential top-five overall talent, but he in no way fits in with the Sacramento Kings.

Sacramento currently has the following guards on its roster: Isaiah Thomas, Jimmer Fredette, Marcus Thornton, Terrence Williams, Francisco Garcia and Tyreke Evans. None of them are going to be either restricted or unrestricted free agents this offseason.

The last thing that the Kings need is to add another guard to their collection, especially with a hole at small forward and a need for another solid big man to pair with DeMarcus Cousins.

Last time I checked, Tyreke Evans hadn't been traded, Isaiah Thomas was still a breakout player who went from Mr. Irrelevant to a legitimate starter, and Jimmer Fredette was still a lottery pick who hadn't been given enough minutes.

So how exactly does Lillard fit in? He doesn't. Not even a tiny bit.

Hoopsworlds' Steve Kyler shares a similar opinion

"

Hearing Damian Lillard crushed in Sacramento, and while they need another guard like a hole in the head, they are strongly considering him

— Steve Kyler (@stevekylerNBA) June 20, 2012"

It doesn't matter how well he worked out with the team. When you're drafting near the top of a strong draft class, you have options and you have needs, you fill those needs. Period. End of story.

To be honest, I thought the Kings considering Lillard was a joke at first. That's how bizarre this is.

Kings fans, here's hoping you don't have yet another reason to be frustrated on Thursday night.
