MLB Baseball: Projecting the 2014 All-Star Team
This list was compiled on skills alone, taking age into consideration. These skills include: hitting for average, power and speed, as well as a fielding component.
I chose a player from each league at C, 1B, 2B, 3B and SS, three players in each league in the OF, and four SP and two RP in both leagues.
I know judgements will be made, so if you have one, please kindly let me know. Thanks!
Catcher: AL Carlos Santana, NL Buster Posey
1 of 9Carlos Santana
Although Santana has not put up the numbers he was supposed to thus far, he still gets the call here as his approach at the plate is better than any other catcher out there. He's suffered some injuries in the past, so there is a chance that Cleveland could move him to 1B by 2014.
Buster Posey
Like Santana, injuries have cut short his seasons and both actually had similar ACL tears. Regardless, Posey is the middle-of-the-order bat the Giants have desperately needed, and he will surely continue mashing in 2014.
1B: AL Miguel Cabrera, NL Joey Votto
2 of 9Miguel Cabrera
He'll be 30 in 2014, but will still be the same great player he is today. Migs is one of the best pure hitters in the game, and I don't foresee that changing.
Joey Votto
He might pick up an MVP award this season, and it may not be his last. He too will be 30 in 2014 and will remain a top-5 player.
2B: AL Jason Kipnis, NL Jose Altuve
3 of 9Jason Kipnis
Kipnis been one of the biggest surprises this season. He'll only be 27 once 2014 rolls around, but that's the prime of a player's career, as everyone seems to say.
Jose Altuve
Not many saw this coming from Altuve. He always hit for average in the minors, but he's also stealing bags now, too. He'll be 24 in 2014.
3B: AL: Brett Lawrie, NL: David Wright
4 of 9Brett Lawrie
He fits the Braun-type mold, as he hits for average, power and speed. And there is a chance he'll play like it, come 2014.
David Wright
Absolutely mashes. He'll be 31, so health will be a concern, but when healthy he's easily a top-10 player.
SS: AL Troy Tulowitzki, NL Starlin Castro
5 of 9Troy Tulowitzki
When healthy, Tulo is a stud. He has power, some speed, can hit and is a decent fielder. There are not many like him in the game. He'll be 30 in 2014.
Starlin Castro
Castro led the majors in hits last year. He's on a bad team, but come 2014, the Cubs could be relevant. Castro will be 24.
Outfield: AL: Hamilton, Trout, A. Jones; NL: Harper, C. Gonzalez, Stanton
6 of 9This was hard. Deciding on three OF from each league is a tough task.
AL
I know, Josh Hamilton will be 33 by 2014, but he's the best hitter in the game. When he's healthy, there has not been a more productive player since, well, Bonds.
Mike Trout will be 22 and is already showing the skills prospects told us about.
I had a hard time figuring the final AL spot, and gave it to Adam Jones. He's raking this season, but needs to show more consistency for this title to hold up. He'll be 28.
NL
Everyone knows about Harper's upside and that monstrous power he possesses, and I strongly believe he will live up to the hype. He'll be very young, at 21 years old in 2014, but there is a chance he could be the best in the game.
CarGo, like Hamilton, downright tears up opposing pitchers when health is on his side, and come 2014, at 28, I don't see that changing.
Mike Stanton is a special player, with jaw-dropping power everywhere. He hit the most "no-doubt" home runs last year. He will only get better in time, and will only be 24.
Pitching AL: Verlander, Hernandez, Moore, Price, Papelbon, Johnson
7 of 9Justin Verlander is the best in the game, so no surprise there.
King Felix has not been himself this season, but his stuff is some of the league's best.
Tampa Bay teammates Matt Moore and David Price are both young and have the ability to progress, especially Moore.
Jonathan Papelbon has been a shutdown closer for most of his career, and things will not change by 2014. Jim Johnson may come as a surprise, and he'll be 33 but he may be for real.
Pitching NL: Strasburg, Kershaw, Bumgarner, Cain, Kimbrel, Chapman
8 of 9Stephen Strasburg has some of the best stuff we have ever seen.
Clayton Kershaw is downright nasty and dominant.
Madison Bumgarner will be 24 and he's developing; will be very special.
Matt Cain is Matt Cain, and will only be 29.
Craig Kimbrel is young and has an overpowering arm—same goes for Aroldis Chapman and his 100+ MPH fastball.
Honorable Mentions

SS: Jose Reyes, Elvis Andrus
OF: Andrew McCutchen, Justin Upton, Jason Heyward, Jay Bruce
