NBA Free Agents 2012: Available Shooting Guards with Unlimited Range
The NBA free agency period starts July 1 and several teams will be targeting sharpshooting guards.
The three-point shot is vital to a team’s success in the NBA and there are veterans with smooth jumpers available.
Here are four two-guards who are unrestricted free agents and can light it up from beyond the arc.
Ray Allen, 36 years old
Allen is arguably the greatest three-point shooter in the history of basketball. He has made the most three-pointers of any player in league history and set the record for most three-pointers made in a single season in 2005-06.
At 36, he has not lost any accuracy on his long-range shots and hit 45.3 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc this past season.
He has one of the quickest releases in all of basketball and would be a huge boost to any team that needs help in the backcourt.
Allen has accomplished so much in his career that he will almost certainly want to sign with a contender. There is no doubt that he can still be a valuable piece on a championship team.
Jamal Crawford, 32 years old
Crawford may not be as efficient as some of the other shooters available, but he is streaky and can score points in bunches.
He is also comfortable coming off the bench and won the Sixth Man of the Year Award with the Hawks in 2010. He averaged 18 points per game that year.
His numbers dropped with the Portland Trail Blazers this season and he put up just 13.9 points per game on 30.8 percent shooting from three-point range.
In the right situation, Crawford is a dangerous scorer and he can be a valuable addition to a team’s second unit.
Jason Terry, 34 years old
Jason Terry is another Sixth Man of the Year award-winner and has been one of the most productive bench players in the league for several years.
He has averaged over 15 points per game for seven consecutive seasons with the Dallas Mavericks.
He shot 37.8 percent from three-point range this past season but also has an excellent mid-range game.
He is a smooth shooter and a savvy veteran who can be productive as a starter or off the bench.
J.R. Smith, 26 years old
Smith signed midseason with the New York Knicks and provided them with a scoring punch off the bench.
He averaged 12.5 points on 34.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc. He too is a streaky shooter who can go off for huge scoring nights.
Smith has often been thought of as a selfish player, but his talent is undeniable.
He is an explosive athlete and a lights-out shooter who can hit shots from anywhere on the floor. Any team that needs an offensive boost would be smart to sign him.
