NBA Draft 2012: 7 College Stars Who Will Slip out of 1st Round

Alvaro AlfaroJun 7, 2018

The 2012 NBA Draft coming up next week has many teams scrambling to get their selections in order. At this point not much can be done to help a player's draft stock to dramatically boost them up in the first-round.

Here is a list of players that have fallen out of favor with teams; and will likely slip out of Round 1 of the NBA Draft.

Fab Melo, Syracuse

1 of 7

Looking at Fab Melo, he definitely passes the eye ball test. He's a legit seven-footer, but his lack of post moves really hurt his draft stock.

Melo is still too raw to be taken in Round 1 of the NBA Draft. With his size he should be a dominant force in the paint on both ends of the floor, but he's not.

He has shown signs of being a good shot blocker after he averaged 2.9 in his sophomore year at Syracuse. Melo has the potential to be a good defender, but at this point he's anything but elite.

Doron Lamb, Kentucky

2 of 7

Doron Lamb put up efficient numbers in his sophomore campaign at Kentucky even with his limited shots. He had a field goal percentage of .474, but standing at 6'4" could prove to be a problem for him in the NBA.

Lamb is a little undersized to play shooting guard for a large number of minutes and he really isn't a suitable option to play point guard for much time, either. Even though he has handles to play the lead guard position, he really doesn't have the mindset and decision making to play the role effectively.

Quincy Miller, Baylor

3 of 7

Quincy Miller is the type of player that really would have benefited with one more year in college. Deciding to enter the NBA Draft after playing just one year at Baylor will affect his growth going forward, which is why many teams aren't lined up to pick him in the first round.

He has impressive size for a small forward at 6'9", but his quickness and strength make him an average player at best.

John Jenkins, Vanderbilt

4 of 7

His silky jump shot makes him a first-round talent, but John Jenkins is still far from a complete player. He lacks the athleticism and strength of a legit shooting guard, which is why he is able to slide down to point guard with ease.

This combo guard has potential, but he needs to work on becoming a better creator on offense. He looks for his own shot too often instead of trying to find passing lanes. This is what can ultimately push him out of the first round.

Khris Middleton, Texas A&M

5 of 7

Khris Middleton is gifted enough to be a swingman and play both the shooting guard and small forward position. Even though he isn't dynamic at either position, he can fill in those two slots nicely. At 6'8" Middleton has a pretty good jump shot, but lacks the quickness to consistently get around defenders.

Since he's stuck between positions some teams may find it difficult to fit him into their rotations. Even with his size he has trouble defensively, which will be an even bigger issue once he's in the NBA.

Will Barton, Memphis

6 of 7

Will Barton would be a lock for the first round if only he was stronger. His frame gives him quickness, but it also makes him a subpar defender.

He put up impressive numbers during his sophomore season by averaging 18.1 points and 8.1 rebounds. However, his thin body doesn't make him a valuable commodity.

Festus Ezeli, Vanderbilt

7 of 7

Festus Ezeli only has a few moves in his arsenal on offense and he has no game outside of the paint. He has the physical tools to be a good NBA center, but he lacks the quickness to consistently get to the rim.

His 6'11" frame should make him a terror on the boards, but he only averaged less than six during his senior year at Vanderbilt. Ezeli is an unpolished player on both offense and defense despite playing four years in college. The lack of growth in his game may lead teams to believe he doesn't have a lot of potential left.
