Michigan Football: Will Campbell Pleads Guilty to Misdemeanor; Is Not a Felon
Last month, Michigan defensive tackle Will Campbell made headlines for all the wrong reasons by being charged with felony and misdemeanor counts of malicious destruction of property. The mind raced at what Campbell could have done to warrant a felony charge and how severe Brady Hoke's punishment was going to be.
And then it was revealed that Campbell was arrested for Bo-Duke-ing over a car and wrecking the hood. Not the stuff of criminal legend, that.
As such, according to ESPN.com, Campbell pled guilty today to the misdemeanor charge alongside an agreement to pay $2,100 in restitution. Here's more:
Campbell admitted to sliding across the hood of a 2003 Lincoln Town Car on the 600 block of Church Street in Ann Arbor early in the morning on April 7. He initially was charged with both felony and misdemeanor malicious destruction of property, but the felony charge was dropped as part of the plea deal.
Sentencing for Campbell is scheduled for July 29 at the 15th District Court in Ann Arbor.
Campbell, 20, also is due in court on July 23 for a pretrial hearing on a misdemeanor charge of a minor purchasing, consuming or possessing liquor stemming from the same incident.
Perhaps he sees a game or two of suspension, but if he doesn't, that's hardly the end of the world. Even the description of the crime seems at odds with the incident itself; if you're 315 pounds and think you can execute a proper hood slide without maiming the hood past the point of utility, you're probably less malicious and more idiotic.
That said, this is probably the only way the owner was ever going to get the car repairs recompensed without dealing with insurance and subsequent rate hikes and all that, so it's good the cop was there to make sure Campbell was held culpable for the incident. There shouldn't be any resentment of that fact.
But sentencing someone to a felony is a very serious thing to do to them and their lives, particularly if it involves dismissal from college for a young person who, at the end of the day, was just trying to look cool and failed pretty hard. So good on the attorneys for talking this down to a misdemeanor, and hopefully everybody involved—or at the very least just Campbell—can learn and move on.
