US Open Golf TV Coverage 2012: Complete Listings for Round 2
The US Open 2012 is proving to truly be Golf's Toughest Test. The field is struggling to keep pace with the demand of the Olympic Club, as only six golfers finished Round 1 below par.
Among those golfers was Tiger Woods, who finished the day one under, which was good enough to be three strokes back of leader Michael Thompson.
Woods' partners, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson, didn't fare nearly as well, as two of the best golfers in the world finished six and eight strokes over, respectively.
Let's recap the action of Day 1 before looking ahead to the next day.
Thursday
Phil Mickelson
Lefty is still one of the favorites in the game, despite his declining play.
After pulling out of the Memorial Tournament due to fatigue, he looked to right the ship in San Francisco. However, a horrible first shot things didn't get better, and he finished the day at six over par.
Bubba Watson
After winning the Masters earlier this year, Bubba Watson looked to win just the second Major Championship of his career, but he could not handle the challenge of Olympic Park, and he finished eight over par.
Luke Donald
The world's No. 1 sure didn't play like it on Thursday, proving just how difficult this course is.
He finished the day nine strokes over par, and is in danger of losing his spot atop the golf world.
Michael Thompson
Believe it or not, the leader of the US Open 2012 is Michael Thompson, who has never won a Major Championship, or even finished better than tied for 28th before.
He would continue the trend of golfers to win their first Major, as the last 12 Major Championships have been won by golfers who had not previously won one.
Rory McIlroy
The winner of last year's US Open is having trouble defending his crown, finishing the first round at seven over par. He would be just the seventh golfer to ever repeat at the US Open in history, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen.
Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods started well, finishing Day 1 at one under par.
He is currently tied for second, but he looked much better than his finals score showed on Thursday.
Woods is in a great position to become the Tiger of old, and all eyes will be on him in the next three rounds.
