Why Amar'e Stoudemire to the Warriors Is a Dreadful Idea

Steven ResnickFeb 9, 2009

Apparently there's a rumor of a trade that would either involve Monta Ellis or Andris Biedrins to acquire Amar'e Stoudemire from the Phoenix Suns. This would be a one-sided trade the Warriors would be the team that got screwed.

First off if the Warriors were to trade Biedrins or Ellis each of them would be under contract for the next five years to wreak havoc against the Warriors. Secondly, Stoudemire would be in Oakland for the rest of this year on a team that isn't going to make the playoffs and could quite be possibly traded again before next year's All-Star break or he walks for greener pastures when he becomes a free agent in 2010.

The Warriors wouldn't benefit at all from the trade either. Biedrins has become a solid rebounder has showed that he can pass out of the post and has been getting better at using his right hand in finishing. He's usually around the basket and knows his limitations and he's still way too young to pretty much end up with nothing once Stoudemire becomes a free agent.

If Monta Ellis is traded it would go down as one of the worst trades in NBA history. Even though Monta isn't fully 100 percent yet he has shown glimpses of the player he was. He's a 20 point scorer who can finish at the rim and hit the mid range jumper—a lost art in the NBA.

The Warriors would be stupid to trade Ellis even if Team President Robert Rowell and Owner Chris Cohan are upset with Ellis, it serves no purpose to get rid of their best player when healthy.

Lastly, for the Warriors it would mean that Brandan Wright or Anthony Randolph would be traded. It would more than likely be Randolph, yet Randolph has shown that he can make up for being out of position with his athletic ability and he can play some defense too.

His attitude has gotten better and against the Utah Jazz yesterday he showed how much he has improved. He still makes mistakes but his defensive intensity is way better then it was earlier in the season.

Another problem with acquiring Stoudemire is that it would mean Brandan Wright when he returns from injury won't get much playing time unless Ronny Turiaf gets into foul trouble. Stoudemire could also play center while the Warriors play a small lineup, but still Wright needs to develop his game and Stoudemire would hurt his confidence.

On to Stoudemire himself. There's a huge problem with the Warriors and that is their defense has been nonexistent all season and by getting Stoudemire it won't help improve the defense.

Like Biedrins, Stoudemire tends to get into foul trouble because he doesn't move his feet or he tries too hard on the defensive end which isn't a bad thing, but it means that he's liable to get 2-3 fouls rather quickly.

Stoudemire has improved his mid range game and can get to the rim and he has dramatically improved his free throw percentage. Yet, another problem is that Stoudemire isn't a dominant rebounder which is something the Warriors need and if Biedrins goes who's going to replace the three rebounds per game that are lost if Biedrins goes?

So in the end does it make sense for the Warriors to bring in Amar’e Stoudemire? The answer is clearly no especially if it means giving up Randolph or either Biedrins or Ellis. Just not a good trade by any stretch of the imagination.
