Toronto Raptors Summer League: Terrell Stoglin Player Breakdown and Analysis
Even though Terrell Stoglin went undrafted, he now has a chance to make an impact at the professional level for the Toronto Raptors on their summer league roster.
It will certainly be interesting to see how Stoglin's pure ability to score fits in alongside the Raptors' No. 8 draft pick, Terrence Ross, and if Stoglin's game can translate into the NBA.
Terrell Stoglin should still be playing college basketball at the University of Maryland. Unfortunately, that's not an option for him, as he decided to enter the draft after receiving a one-year disciplinary suspension for breaking the school's code of conduct.
With that being said, Stoglin is still a very talented player who's actually one of the more prolific and pure scorers coming out of this year's draft class.
What Stoglin Brings to the Team
As a sophomore at Maryland, Stoglin averaged an impressive 21.6 points per game, and he did so with limited talent around him.
While Stoglin certainly won't step in and put up that kind of production, he's capable of adding a level of depth and production to the depth chart at the shooting guard position.
Stoglin's lack of size will certainly hold him back during his rookie year, but his agility and aggressive nature will help him adapt his game to the world of professional basketball more quickly than other rookies his size.
What Experts Are Saying About Stoglin
The consensus on Stoglin is that he'll struggle to transition into the NBA because of his inability to play tenaciously on the defensive side of the ball.
Don Markus of the Baltimore Sun reported that a lot of scouts feel like Stoglin needed another year in college basketball to prove that he can play at the next level.
"I talked with a number of NBA scouts last winter who said the same thing about Stoglin: that he needed at least another year in Mark Turgeon's system to prove he could be a full-time point guard in the pros.
"
Stoglin's Rookie Impact
It's going to be difficult for Stoglin to overcome his lack of size and his raw potential in his first year in professional basketball.
Aside from being a productive member of the team in practice or earning a few minutes in blowouts, it's hard to see Stoglin having a more immediate impact.
With proper coaching and some veteran talent to help him transition into the world of professional basketball, there's no doubt that Stoglin can develop into a solid second option coming off the bench at the shooting guard or point guard spot. His pure ability to score is that good. He just needs more time to adequately develop.
Summer League Prediction
Stoglin will impress during the summer league to the point where the Raptors will be tempted to keep him on their roster to start the 2012-13 season.
The Raptors will be impressed with Stoglin's intensity and confidence on the offensive side of the ball. The only question is if there will be a spot for him on the roster.
Stoglin is going to have to prove that he's an NBA-ready player, and the summer league is a perfect time to do just that.
