Steve Kerr Must Trade Amare Stoudemire To Complete His Transition

Ari HoringFeb 9, 2009

Steve Kerr, the G.M of the Suns, went through the classic GM dilemma last year. Do I stick with what I have even if I won’t win a championship? Or do I switch things up, but risk my team getting worse?

The goal of every NBA team is to try to win a championship. Steve Kerr could have stayed with the same roster and fast pace offense and had a great regular season record, but he still wouldn’t have a won title.

As of now, he hasn’t gotten the results he had hoped for, and truthfully, he most likely won’t ever. But make no mistake about it, Kerr's philosophy is right.

The Suns were very good before Kerr was brought in. Kerr’s job was essentially to make the Suns true championship contenders.

He realized that with the offensive system and players the Suns had in place, they weren’t going to win a title. He has thus been trying to bring a slower pace, more physical team to Phoenix.

Trading for Shaq was the first step. The second step was getting Terry Porter, and now the final piece to the puzzle has to be trading Stoudemire.

Stoudemire does not fit into the Sun's new offense.

There is no doubt that Stoudemire is a highlight machine who at times can be impossible to stop. The problem is that Stoudemire the player isn't as good as Stoudemire the entertainer.

He can only be dominant in a fast break offense, he is an under-performing defender and rebounder, and he won't do the little things to make your team better.

He has been complaining this year that Phoenix's style of offense has made other teams lose respect for him and he is right. He no longer demands as much attention as he has in the past.

He no longer gets as many easy baskets as he used to. When's the last time he had one of those unstoppable performances besides his 50 point game earlier this year? This year has exposed Stoudemire for the real player he is. Stoudemire isn't as good in a traditional half court offense with a true center because he lacks post skills.

He is great face-up offensive player. However, in order to be a true dominant offensive big man in a traditional setting, a player needs to be able to play with his back to the basket.

What Kerr gets from Stoudemire will make or break him as a GM.

With Shaq and Nash getting older, the window is closing fast and this year might be their only chance to win a title.

Shaq has been playing great this year,  and Nash, although not as good as he was in a fast break offense, is still a great game manager and play-maker.

The Suns still have great role players in Grant Hill, Leandro Barbosa, Jason Richardson, and Matt Barnes. What the Suns really need is another shooter and more defensive-minded power forward.

Steve Kerr better make sure he finds the perfect trade for Stoudemire, or else this could very be his last year.

The truth is although Steve Kerr verbally committed to bring a more physical, defensive minded team to Phoenix, he has made enough moves to really be able to get to complete his transition.

All Steve Kerr has really done is added Shaq, gotten rid of Marion, and added a different style coach.

If your restaurant isn’t successful and you want to change the style of a restaurant, you don’t just change the manager of a restaurant and add a couple chefs to fit your restaurant.

If all of other chefs are the same one as before, the restaurant isn’t going to get better, and the cooking styles are going to conflict with each other.

What Kerr really needed to do was trade Stoudemire or Nash, or both before the season. Now that he has made it obvious that he wants to trade Stoudemire, and Stoudemire hasn’t been as dominant, he is isn’t going to get as much as he could have.

If Steve Kerr gets fired, it won’t be because he broke up the Sun’s exciting five-second offense, but it will because he didn’t do a good job of transitioning it.
