Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley Results: Tainted Finish Ruins Super Fight

Donald WoodJun 10, 2012

After Manny Pacquiao dominated Timothy Bradley for the majority of their championship bout Saturday night, the fight went to the judges’ scorecards in what should have been a unanimous decision for Pac-Man.

In a matter of seconds, everything that boxing fans had been dreaming of was ruined; say goodbye to the idea of a super fight between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.

Ring-side judges C.J. Ross and Duane Ford scored the fight for Bradley, 115-113, while Jerry Roth had it for Pacquiao, 115-113. If you had the pleasure of watching the actual match, though, you know it wasn’t that close.

Pacquiao told Yahoo! Sports after the fight about the way he lost the fight and how he doesn’t agree with the decision:

"

I do my best and I guess my best wasn't good enough. I've been watching the tapes of his fights. Tonight, he never hurt me. Most of his punches hit my arms. I don't know what happened [with the scoring]. I have no problem. I'll be ready for the rematch. No doubt [I won the fight.]

"

While Manny remained classy even in defeat, there was no doubt that he was heartbroken over the fact that it was the judges that took away his seven-year winning streak and his chances at ever fighting in what would have been a true super fight.

Now that Pacquiao’s schedule for the latter 2012 is filled by the rematch that Bradley had been calling for during his pre-fight verbal tirades, it pushes any possible fight with Floyd Mayweather into 2013 at least.

That is, if Mayweather would even consider the fight now that Manny has lost.

Pac-Man’s promoter Bob Arum vented to the media after the fight:

"

Can you believe that? I had it 10-2! After I got into the ring after the fight, I went over to Bradley and said 'You did very well.' He said, 'I tried hard, but I couldn't beat the guy.' This is crazy. You talk about killing boxing? All three scorecards you throw out.

"

Whether you like Arum as a businessman or not, he is right that the judges making the choices Saturday killed boxing for the casual fans.

Not since Mike Tyson was punching his way through the heavyweight division have this many sports fans cared as much about boxing as they did when the talk of the super fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao surfaced.

Fans wanted to care again, but now there is no reason.

While there still could be a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao, there is no way it would be the same spectacle with Manny losing this fight in such a controversial way.
