WWE: 5 Reasons Why It Is the Perfect Time to Bring Back the Hardcore Title
Remember the Hardcore championship? Sure, it was the silliest title in the history of the WWE, but it as also the coolest.
Everything about the title was wacky, from its design to its 24/7 rule that allowed the championship to change hands at any time (provided a referee was present). But that is what made the title so awesome.
Somethings have changed since 2002, when Rob Van Dam unified the title with the Intercontinental championship—namely, the PG Era—but other changes have also taken place in the WWE.
Sure, its wrestlers don't get hit on the head anymore, but what has replaced chair-shot action is a storm of tweet mentions and YouTube videos, and while this is not the best change for most of WWE programing, one title does benefit from the changes that have transpired in the past 10 years—the Hardcore championship.
The world is different now and for better or worse, it seems that there is no better time to bring back the greatest title ever than now.
The New 3-Hour Raw Format
1 of 5Without a doubt, three hours will be plenty of time for Raw's monumental 1,000th episode, but what happens after then?
Once episode 1,001 rolls by, will three hours be too much? What can the company do to fill that time?
That's where the hardcore championship comes in. The legendary title was part of some of the greatest moments of the WWE's Attitude era.
Bringing the title back would not only be a blast from the past, but it would also be a much-needed breath of fresh air to what as of late has become stagnant WWE programming.
The title is so unique that it could be defended multiple times on Raw, giving viewers a reason to stick around. Just because the title changed hands in the first segment of the the episode doesn't mean it can't change hands later on—and that makes for awesome TV.
It Would Give a Purpose to Comedic Characters and the Midcard Roster
2 of 5Imagine Santino and Heath Slater trying to wrestle around the arena for ownership of the Hardcore championship.
The WWE usually has these two men in goofy skits anyways, why not have them wrestle instead?
But of course, the title isn't limited to comedic characters. People like Tyson Kidd, Alex Riley, Curt Hawkins and Tyler Reks could all be thrown into the mix.
For the first time in a while, the feuds that revolve around a title do not have to be limited to two or three people. Because the title can change hands at any time, even Divas like Beth Phoenix or Natalya could enter the scene and get their much-deserved TV time.
Provide a Reason to Watch Online Matches
3 of 5The best thing about the hardcore championship is that it doesn't have to be defended just on Raw or SmackDown. In fact, the holder of the title could defend it on the WWE's two online shows, NXT and Superstars.
A Zack Ryder-Antonio Cesaro Superstars main event is an OK main event, but a Ryder-Cesaro Superstars main event for the hardcore championship with external players lurking around makes Superstars actually sound interesting.
24/7-Rule Matches on YouTube
4 of 5The WWE seems set in trying to promote their YouTube content; what better way to do so than by having Hardcore championship matches shown online?
Picture this: Hardcore champion Justin Gabriel is walking around the arena when suddenly, Camacho jumps from out of the corner and assaults Gabriel.
Camacho, after winning the title, proudly walks around for a few seconds, when Hunico demands that Camacho hand the title over. Boom—the two men begin wrestling, only to be left in a weakened state after their altercation. Then Gabriel, having gotten his strength back, takes the title away from the two men.
Oh yeah, and did I mention this could all be on YouTube?
Social Media Integration
5 of 5With the WWE pushing Twitter and now Tout more than ever before, think of the possibilities that social media could have on the championship.
Now that Twitter allows people to follow their favorite superstars, what's stopping opponents from finding out where the Hardcore champion is?
Maybe title holder Ricardo Rodriguez is setting up his camera for a Tout post when suddenly, the Usos come and knock him down, and in a period of 15 seconds, a new champion is created.
The possibilities are endless.
