Georgia Football: Why Bulldogs Are a Solid Bet to Hoist the Crystal Football
It seems like every summer we are either talking about Georgia head coach Mark Richt being on the hot seat or the Bulldogs winning it all—and there's never anything in between.
This season, the Georgia hype machine is in full effect, to the point that the Web site BeyondTheBets.com recently said that it was their pick to win the BCS National Championship.
BCS National Championship?
That's a little lofty on the surface, but the Bulldogs are getting 19-1 odds in Las Vegas, which makes them a solid pick.
Georgia misses LSU, Alabama and Arkansas out of the SEC West for the second straight season, and the SEC East—while improved—is still vastly inferior to the SEC West. Georgia will likely be an underdog in only one game on its schedule, Oct. 6 at South Carolina. If the Bulldogs can get past the Gamecocks, there's a legitimate chance that they run the table.
Why?
Simple, the Bulldogs are loaded.
Aaron Murray is a legitimate Heisman candidate at quarterback, Keith Marshall provides insurance at the running back position if Isaiah Crowell becomes flaky again and the defense—led by All-American candidate Jarvis Jones at linebacker—is one of the nation's best.
Do I actually think that Georgia is going to win the BCS National Championship? No.
But the schedule suggests that the Bulldogs will at least be in the discussion. When you're in the discussion, all you need is a break or two to break through that glass ceiling.
At 19-1, that's some good value.
