Kyle Anderson: Why He Is UCLA Basketball's Most Important Recruit

Maxwell OgdenJun 1, 2018

The 2012 recruiting class for the UCLA Bruins men's basketball program is one for the ages. Ben Howland's crew landed two of the top five players on the ESPN 100, as well as two other players in the Top 50.

To put it simply: The UCLA Bruins are on their way to being this year's Kentucky Wildcats.

At this point, it's not hard to predict who will lead the Bruins into battle. Prized recruit Shabazz Muhammad, considered by many to be the gem of this year's recruiting class, is as dominant an offensive force as we've seen in recent years. His combination of low-post and mid-range scoring is paired with top-tier ball-handling and dribble penetration.

Contrary to popular belief, this does not make Muhammad the most important freshman coming to Los Angeles. That honor goes to Kyle Anderson, the 6'8" tweener with unbelievable ball-handling capabilities and equally efficient mid-range shooting.

But what sets him apart as the Bruins' most important recruit?

In 2012, Lazeric Jones and Jerime Anderson combined to supply the Bruins with an average of 8.3 assists per game. Since then, both have graduated and moved on from the basketball program. This leaves a major need for a lead facilitator to emerge.

Anderson, who many consider to be a point forward, has the lateral quickness and overwhelming length to play any position on the perimeter. Where he is best fit, however, is at the point.

Anderson has exceptional court vision and impeccable decision-making in the half and open court. He's also a lethal passer who can fit passes where they need to be, when they need to be there. Consider Anderson this year's Jalen Rose.

Aside from his ability to facilitate, Anderson is one of the rare prospects who knows how to properly utilize his size.

Throughout his senior year of high school, the Fairview, NJ, native displayed a welcomed tendency to post up smaller opponents. He also finished well when close to the basket, utilizing his length and crafty ball handling to enter and finish in the lane.

Regardless of where Ben Howland opts to play Kyle Anderson, the rewards will be limitless. Anderson is a threat to be a first year All-American and will be a name with draft buzz by season's end.

Most importantly, he'll be a key contributor to UCLA's impending run for the National Title. The Bruins hit the jackpot here.
