Biggest Winners After Two Days
Player: Carlos Correa
Leading up to draft day, it looked like the Houston Astros were targeting a starting pitcher with the first overall pick, but they threw a curveball of their own by selecting Correa. The Puerto Rican shortstop has all the tools to become an offensive force.
He's already a plus defender with great range and a good arm. He's a little bit more raw at the plate, but the 17-year-old phenom has illustrated great power potential and should improve across the board once he gains some experience.
Correa truly fits the mold of a modern shortstop. It's no longer just a defensive position, which will make him even more valuable once he does reach the big leagues. While he was expected to go early, getting taken off the board first was a pleasant surprise.
Team: Pittsburgh Pirates
After watching elite college starter Mark Appel fall into their lap, the Pirates decided to take a chance that they could sign him. If they do eventually get a deal done, he will turn out to be the biggest steal of the opening round.
He's the most polished pitcher in the class, which means he should advance through the system at a pretty steady rate. With the Pirates finally on the verge of getting back into playoff contention, that made him worth the risk for Pittsburgh.
The Pirates went on to select a lot of good athletes like Barrett Barnes and Brandon Thomas. They aren't well-rounded baseball players quite yet, but their tools are undeniable. Along with a handful of other pitchers, Pittsburgh has put together a really strong overall draft class.
