UFC 150: 5 Possible Opponents for Donald Cerrone in Denver

Tim McTiernanJun 4, 2012

Donald Cerrone has made it clear that he wants to fight at UFC 150 in Denver, Colorado.

Cerrone was born in Colorado Springs, and everybody always wants to fight close to their home. Cerrone is no different.

He is currently on one of the best streaks of his career, having won seven of his last eight fights and having finished his opponent in four of those.

The lightweight division is one of the most stacked in the UFC, so there is no shortage of opponents for Cowboy.

Let's take a look at who he could face off against.

Jamie Varner

1 of 5

Jamie Varner recently made his return to the UFC with a dispatching of the highly touted prospect Edson Barboza.

Varner and Cerrone have met twice before, with them splitting the decisions. Varner won the first at WEC 38 and Cerrone won the second at WEC 51.

Varner may be a bit below Cerrone in the division, but Cerrone would probably have no problem facing Varner for a third time.

Anthony Pettis

2 of 5

I really, really hope this fight happens. Then I can say I predicted it months in advance.

Anthony Pettis is 2-1 in the UFC, and has scored a decision victory over Jeremy Stephens and a knockout victory over Joe Lauzon.

His only loss came at the hands of Clay Guida, who fought in a title eliminator soon after that fight.

Pettis is making a case to get a shot at the UFC title, and a fight with Cerrone could be a No. 1 contender match.

Jim Miller

3 of 5

Jim Miller would appear to be the ultimate gatekeeper in the lightweight division.

He is 21-4 in his career, and his four losses have come to the top four fighters in the division: Benson Henderson, Frankie Edgar, Gray Maynard and Nate Diaz.

Should Cerrone and Miller square off, it would determine who is a gatekeeper and who is a contender.

Clay Guida/Gray Maynard Loser

4 of 5

The winner of this fight is likely in line for a No. 1 contender match, and the loser is still a viable top contender.

Should Cerrone face Guida, it would be interesting to see if Cerrone gets pushed into a Guida-esque fight, or if Cerrone is able to pick Guida apart.

On the other side, if Cerrone fought Maynard it'd be interesting to see if Maynard's wrestling is able to neutralize Cerrone's striking and jiu-jitsu.

Melvin Guillard

5 of 5

This would be assuming that Melvin Guillard win his fight against Fabricio Camoes at UFC 148, it would also be unlikely due to the quick turnaround.

If—for some reason—the UFC can't find anybody else to fight Cowboy, a fight with Guillard would produce fireworks, and would be a great slugfest between two top strikers.
