B/R Official Rankings for June: The Top 10 Flyweights in MMA

Matt JuulJun 6, 2018

The flyweight division hasn't seen much movement in the rankings this month, but all that is about to change as two of the UFC's best 125ers are set to square off inside the Octagon to kick off June.

Former bantamweight title challenger Demetrious Johnson will have his highly-anticipated rematch with Ian "Uncle Creepy" McCall as they headline the UFC's next event on FX.

In their last meeting, Johnson and McCall fought to a controversial majority draw in the opening round of the flyweight tournament.  The winner of this rematch is set to take on Joseph Benavidez to determine the promotion's first ever 125-pound champion.

As we await the resolution of what's sure to be an exciting end to the UFC's flyweight tournament, let's take a look at the top 10 125ers in MMA today.

These rankings are the combined efforts of some of Bleacher Report MMA's best writers, as we continue to try and provide you with the best content on the web.

10. Louis Gaudinot

1 of 10

Promotion: UFC

Record: 6-2

Most recent fight: Submitted John Lineker at UFC on FOX 3

Next fight: TBA

Previous ranking: 10

Louis Gaudinot earned himself a spot in the top 10 last month after an amazing, Fight of the Night-winning performance opposite John Lineker at UFC on FOX 3.

After a back-and-forth battle in the first two rounds, Gaudinot was able to catch Lineker with a guillotine choke with just seconds left in the second round.

Now finding success at his more natural weight class at 125, Gaudinot is a flyweight prospect to keep an eye on.

9. Ulysses Gomez

2 of 10

Promotion: Tachi Palace Fights

Record: 9-2

Most recent fight: Submission win over Cody Gibson at Tachi Palace Fights 11

Next fight: TBA

Previous ranking: No. 9

Ulysses Gomez has proven to be a force in both the flyweight and bantamweight divisions.

A former flyweight champion under the Tachi Palace Fights banner, Gomez recently won the bantamweight title with his submission win over Cody Gibson last December.

Gomez was set to make his return to the flyweight division last month, but was forced out of a bout with Adam Rothweiler due to a staph infection.

8. Mamoru Yamaguchi

3 of 10

Promotion: Tachi Palace Fights

Record: 26-6-3

Most recent fight: Unanimous decision loss to Jussier da Silva at Tachi Palace Fights 10

Next fight: N/A

Previous ranking: No. 8

Eccentric Japanese flyweight Mamoru Yamaguchi has been a staple of the lighter weight classes since making his MMA debut back in 1999.

A former Shooto champion in both the 123 and the 132-pound divisions, Yamaguchi remains one of the toughest flyweight veterans in the sport today.

7. John Dodson

4 of 10

Promotion: UFC

Record: 13-5

Most recent fight: Unanimous decision win over Tim Elliott at UFC on FOX 3

Next fight: N/A

Previous ranking: 7

One of the UFC's most exciting and innovative lighter-weight fighters, Dodson burst onto the flyweight rankings last month after a solid, unanimous decision victory over Tim Elliott.

Dodson returned to his more natural weight class after emphatically taking The Ultimate Fighter season 14 crown, defeating Team Alpha Male product TJ Dillashaw in a Knockout of the Night-winning performance.

Another big win will catapult Dodson into the upper echelon of the division as well as add his name into the title conversation.

6. Darrell Montague

5 of 10

Promotion: Tachi Palace Fights / Gladiator Challenge

Record: 11-2

Most recent fight: TKO win over Taylor McCorriston at Tachi Palace Fights 13

Next fight: TBA

Previous ranking: No. 6

After losing the Tachi Palace Fights flyweight crown to Ian McCall last August, Darrell Montague has bounced back nicely with two straight victories and looks to be finding his groove again.

Montague recently defeated Taylor McCorriston at Tachi Palace Fights 13, defeating the fellow flyweight in the first round with a barrage of punches for the TKO.

5. Yasuhiro Urushitani

6 of 10

Promotion: UFC

Record: 19-5-6

Most recent fight: TKO loss to Joseph Benavidez at UFC on FX 2

Next fight: TBA

Previous ranking: No. 5

Former Shooto Bantamweight champion Yasuhiro Urushitani suffered his first loss in almost four years against Joseph Benavidez in the opening round of the flyweight tournament.

Urushitani was unable to deal with Benavidez's power and lost by TKO just 11 seconds into the second round.

A solid veteran with over a decade of experience, expect Urushitani to come out with a bang the next time he enters the Octagon.

4. Jussier da Silva

7 of 10

Promotion: Tachi Palace Fights, Shooto

Record: 13-1

Most recent fight: Submission victory over Martin Cora at Coliseu Extreme Fight

Next fight: N/A

Previous ranking: No. 4

One of the most highly-touted flyweights not competing in the UFC, Jussier da Silva has been a force at 125 since making his debut in 2005.

The current Shooto South American 123-pound champion, da Silva, has won four straight since a unanimous decision loss to Ian McCall last year.  With big wins over the likes of Mamoru Yamaguchi and Danny Martinez, expect a jump to the big leagues for da Silva in the very near future.

3. Demetrious Johnson

8 of 10

Promotion: UFC

Record: 14-2-1

Most recent fight: Majority draw against Ian McCall at UFC on FX 2

Next fight: Ian McCall at UFC on FX 3

Previous ranking: No. 3

After an impressive run in the UFC's bantamweight division culminated in a lopsided loss to current champ Dominick Cruz, Demetrious Johnson's move to flyweight has been a tougher road than expected.

Taking on Ian McCall in the opening round of the flyweight tournament, Johnson was originally announced the winner of the bout, but was later stripped of the win after a judging error turned Johnson's win into a majority draw.

Set to take on McCall once again at UFC on FX 3, expect another action-packed bout as Johnson vies for a shot at the flyweight title.

2. Ian McCall

9 of 10

Promotion: UFC

Record: 11-2-1

Most recent fight: Majority draw against Demetrious Johnson at UFC on FX 2

Next fight: Demetrious Johnson at UFC on FX 3

Previous ranking: No. 2

Ian McCall has been a long-time flyweight standout and looks to become the first 125-pound champ in UFC history.

However, a bit of showboating in his bout with Demetrious Johnson possibly cost him the win in their first matchup, so expect a more focused "Uncle Creepy" in this highly-anticipated rematch.

1. Joseph Benavidez

10 of 10

Promotion: UFC

Record: 16-2

Most recent fight: TKO victory over Yasuhiro Urushitani at UFC on FX 2

Next fight: Winner of Ian McCall vs. Demetrious Johnson II at TBA

Previous ranking: No. 1

Japanese veteran Yasuhiro Urushitani proved to be no match for Joseph Benavidez as the former bantamweight No. 1 contender easily dispatched Urushitani just 11 seconds into the second round.

One of the most talented fighters in all of the lighter weight classes, Benavidez may finally earn himself a strap of UFC gold if he can get past the winner of the Johnson-McCall rematch.

With his quick feet, explosive wrestling and surprisingly powerful hands, there are few in the flyweight division who can contend with this Team Alpha Male standout.
