5 MMA Fights We Still Need to See
The UFC likes to claim that they put on the fights that MMA fans want to see, and for the most part, we can't argue that point. But there's also a handful of fights that we either wanted to see or are still waiting for that we have yet to witness.
Like dangling a juicy steak in front of a caged dog, these fights have been making MMA fans foam at the mouth for quite some time. Whether it's because the desired matchups would be between teammates, create weight-class issues or expose an age discrepancy, these fights simply haven't happened.
Regardless of why they didn't or haven't been scheduled, these fights are sure to top the list of any MMA fan's wish list.
Georges St. Pierre vs. Nick Diaz
1 of 5Although this bout was scheduled twice and fell through both times, a fair share of MMA fans would still like to see Georges St. Pierre and Nick Diaz face each other in a UFC Octagon.
Diaz fans don't consider Carlos Condit to be anything more than a "marathon champion" given his fight strategy against their favorite fighter, and they would love the chance for the guy from Stockton to dethrone the 170 pound kingpin.
Meanwhile, GSP fans point to their guy being the "perfect" fighter and role model for any fighter and fan to follow.
Diaz retired following his loss to Condit, and the UFC is likely done with the Diaz drama-fest which means we won't get to see Diaz shock the world or GSP put on the beating many MMA fans feel Diaz deserves.
Jon Jones vs. Anderson Silva
2 of 5Following Jon Jones' path of destruction through the 205 pound division, many fight fans were sporting the idea of a superfight between him and Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva.
The bout will likely never happen due to the age difference between the two men, but it would certainly fill an arena in a heartbeat. The PPV buys wouldn't be bad either.
Jones has seemed unbeatable thus far in his career, and he hasn't been challenged by anyone inside the Octagon. Silva, meanwhile, has made a career off of making other fighters look silly and has made fighting seem like child's play.
Would Silva's experience, physical skills and talents overcome Jones' youth, strength and skill set?
Randy Couture vs. Fedor Emelianenko
3 of 5A truly epic heavyweight encounter between Randy Couture and Fedor Emelianenko could've made them a boat load of money while they were on top.
Now, Couture is retired after being KO'd at UFC 129 by Lyoto Machida and by all accounts, Emelianenko will close out his career following his bout with Pedro Rizzo.
But if there's one fight that could pull Couture out of retirement, there's no doubt it would be a clash with Emelianenko. Couture even left the UFC in an attempt to secure a bout with the Russian fighter, but it never materialized.
Emelianenko seemed like the smart pick given his talents on the mat and powerful striking, but Couture has been the master of proving MMA fans wrong throughout his entire career.
At least the 10 people who bought EA's MMA will be able to live out this fight in video game form.
Georges St. Pierre vs. Anderson Silva
4 of 5It's no secret that this is the new-age superfight that MMA fans have been wanting for years. It's like Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather; fight fans want to see the two men scrap, but it simply hasn't happened.
Given the emergence of credible challengers at 170 pounds, we likely won't see this fight happen as Silva is getting older and St. Pierre is just recovering from an ACL tear.
The fight hasn't happened due to the two men's schedules not working together or disagreements about what weight the fight should be contested at. Since this fight will likely never happen, MMA fans will go to their graves arguing over who whould've came out on top between these two pound-for-pound kings.
Benson Henderson vs. Anthony Pettis II
5 of 5The first encounter between Benson Henderson and Anthony Pettis was a Hollywood ending to close out the WEC's run. It was an action packed, five-round war that provided one of the most watched moments in MMA history when Pettis leaped off the cage to kick Henderson in the face.
Although Pettis emerged victoriously, it was a fairly even contest and Henderson has had the better run in the UFC as he's the current lightweight champion.
Henderson has been vocal about his feelings of Pettis not being worthy of a title shot while Pettis is adamant that he deserves a shot based on his latest win and the fact that he holds a victory over the champion.
If Henderson can get past Frankie Edgar in their rematch, I would expect to see this dream rematch come to fruition unless Gray Maynard looks like a world beater against Clay Guida.
