Florida State Football: Why Seminoles' Defense Will Carry Team Once Again

Austyn HumphreyJun 7, 2018

Mark Stoops has his brother’s blood.

Bob Stoops, current Oklahoma football coach and one of the best defensive coordinators in the nation during his time at Florida and Kansas State, was a brilliant tactician on the field before landing his own big-time job. Florida State should appreciate how great this year’s Seminole defense will be before Mark takes off.

Last year, obviously, the Seminole defense was a near masterpiece.

The Seminoles led the ACC in scoring defense, but two accomplishments from the autumn shine brightly. Jimbo Fisher’s crew held Oklahoma’s offense to 24 points. But most importantly, the Tribe only allowed 15.1 points per game: fourth in the nation!

With a significantly easier schedule (West Virginia backed out of their home-and-home series with FSU) featuring two FCS teams to open the year, it’s easy to see why Phil Steele picked the Seminoles to win it all.

For the Seminoles to party like it’s 1999, the Garnet and Gold will have to have a stout defense. While E.J. Manuel’s ability to consistently lead remains a question, the Seminoles will have to rely on their anchor of a defense.

They won't let fans down. Read on to find out why.

Chemistry

1 of 3

Florida State finished in the top 10 in five major statistical categories, lose only three starters from last season and have great chemistry between returning starters such as Greg Reid, Xavier Rhodes and LaMarcus Joyner. Bleacher Report writer Soven Berry has Everett Dawkins being the star of the defensive line in 2012.

Simply put, there is leadership on the line and at end, making sure that the Seminoles' defense keep the opposition's running game dead.

Experience

2 of 3

Brandon Jenkins and Bjoern Werner combined for an astounding 15 sacks last season. Newcomer Cornellius Carradine should be an excellent backup to Werner, given his stellar performance in the spring game.

Combine the experience at the ends and interior line, and the 'Noles will likely outperform LSU and Alabama's defense.

Why? Both the Tide and Tigers lose key defensive players and play tougher slates. FSU's experience will make the difference.

Mark Stoops' Magic

3 of 3

Mickey Andrews' defense collapsed in Bobby Bowden's final season, allowing 30 points per game.

Since Mark Stoops' arrival, that has changed.

Even after the 47-17 blowout loss to Oklahoma, Stoops' defense shined in rivalry games—as the Seminoles have gone 4-0 in the Sunshine State. This conquest of the Sunshine State has helped Jimbo Fisher recruit, and should lead to a national championship in 2012.
