Wisconsin Football: Why Montee Ball Will Fail to Live Up to the Hype

Peter RaischJun 7, 2018

Whenever a current player is mentioned in the same breath as Barry Sanders, the expectations take on a life of their own.

Montee Ball's 2011 season could only be described as historic, as the "Wonder from Wentzville," MO rushed and caught his way into college football lore.

Some players fear a sophomore slump.

Unfortunately, Ball is set up for a senior slump, relatively speaking. He has lost too many weapons to avoid the full attention of opposing defenses, and consequently, his stats may take a small tumble from the year before.

No One to Lead the Way

Above all, a running back needs the right personnel on the field.

Bradie Ewing provided the Wisconsin backfield with an explosive and smart fullback to clear away for the Wisconsin rushers. By sealing the edge, both Ball and James White could build some momentum and explode through defenders.

But the former walk-on is off to the Atlanta Falcons, leaving the Badgers with untested, converted defensive end Sherard Cadogan as the next fullback in line. Cadogan has the measurements to be the prototypical "tip of the spear" blocker, but he lacks the experience.

Ball will need his new lead man to be tough, intelligent and make very few mistakes.

Less Experience Up Front

The Wisconsin offensive line is known for its proficiency in paving the way for its stable of running backs. Its attitude of "next man in" has developed a veritable assembly line of NFL-caliber lineman.

The sad truth for Ball is that this year's squad will have lost a wealth of experienced players. Stalwarts Peter Konz and Kevin Zeitler will both be playing on Sundays instead of Saturdays this year.

As a result, the going might be a little tougher for the veteran rusher. Even a second of hesitation or a missed assignment could spell disaster for anyone coming out of the backfield.

For Montee Ball to even approach his numbers from the year before, this unit will have to perform above and beyond already high expectations.

Brand New Quarterback

Right now Bret Bielema is probably making plans to bronze Danny O'Brien's commitment letter after learning two of his quarterbacks will miss the entire 2012 season.

O'Brien provides the Badgers with a legitimate quarterback, but he lacks all the tools his predecessor possessed.

Defenses were distracted enough with Russell Wilson's ability to scramble out of the pocket that Ball could sneak a few extra carries in with opponents on their heels.

O'Brien is a pure pocket passer which makes the game planning much easier for defensive coordinators. While linebackers and defensive backs always had to keep one eye on Wilson, all focus and energy will be directed at Ball this season.
