2012 NBA Draft: Which Team Will Draft Harrison Barnes?

Daniel O'BrienJun 7, 2018

With the 2012 NBA draft lottery in the books and the official draft order in place, it's time to take a look at where North Carolina Tar Heels star Harrison Barnes will land.

At 6'8", Barnes thrived in the ACC with his prolific shooting, ample athleticism and ability to finish. Those same tools will aid him as a reliable wing at the next level.

The way the draft order shakes out, it looks like Barnes could go as high as No. 2 to the Charlotte Bobcats and no lower than No. 10 to the New Orleans Hornets.

Charlotte might consider Barnes at the No. 2 slot because of his sharpshooting, but they'll probably end up selecting someone with a higher overall stock. However, Barnes' combination of length and shot-making skills is tempting to anyone.

He could fit in quite nicely with the Cleveland Cavaliers, as that franchise needs a legitimate wing scorer to produce night in and night out. But the Cavaliers have many holes to fill, so it depends on whether they think Barnes is worthy to take in the top five.

Barnes is definitely a top-10-caliber prospect, so if Charlotte or Cleveland doesn't select him, I expect him to get picked up somewhere between fifth and 10th.

Portland could show interest at No. 6, but with Nicolas Batum and Wesley Matthews in the fold, they aren't looking for salvation at small forward.

Next, we arrive at the most likely destination for Barnes: the Golden State Warriors with the seventh pick. Aside from rookie Klay Thompson, the Warriors didn't get any substantial production from their shooting guards or small forwards.

In today's NBA, the wing player has a great opportunity to score from deep or slash to the basket and draw fouls. Barnes' length and shooting skills are attractive to a team like Golden State looking for scoring from a small forward.

If Barnes falls to seventh, the Warriors should take him.

They already have playmakers at the point (Stephen Curry) and in the post (David Lee), so Barnes could become the key piece that boosts Golden State's chances for contention. He can stretch the defense with his shooting and use his length to finish in the lane.

Here's the order of likelihood for Barnes' potential destinations:

1. Golden State (No. 7)

2. Cleveland (No. 4)

3. New Orleans (No. 10)

4. Portland (No. 6)

5. Charlotte (No. 2)
