5 Players That Stand To Lose the Most in 2012 NFL Training Camp Battles

James DudkoJun 7, 2018

Many of the 2012 NFL training camp battles are defined by quarterback competitions. In Miami and Seattle, veterans like Matt Moore and Tarvaris Jackson stand to lose the most.

While in Tampa Bay, LeGarrette Blount (given a second chance by the Buccaneers) stands to lose his position as the starting running back for the NFC South outfit.

Here are five veterans with the most to lose in 2012 NFL training camp battles:

Tarvaris Jackson, QB, Seattle Seahawks

Tarvaris Jackson won the starting job for only one season with the Seattle Seahawks. Now, Pete Carroll has added Matt Flynn in free agency and sleeper pick Russell Wilson in the third round of the draft.

That leaves Jackson facing an uphill battle to retain his position on the team. Flynn was a sought after prize on the free-agent market and likely has the inside track in this competition.

With Carroll also lauding the early displays from Wilson, Jackson could easily go from a starter to the third string by the start of the new season.

Shaun Rogers, DT, New York Giants

The New York Giants added hulking interior lineman Shaun Rogers just prior to the start of the 2012 draft. The 33-year-old run stopper can help solidify a Big Blue front that struggled somewhat during the regular season.

That is if the much-traveled veteran can beat out youthful duo Linval Joesph and Marvin Austin. Joseph stepped in admirably alongside Chris Canty during the Giants' Super Bowl run.

Austin missed last season due to injury, but was highly-touted as a second-round pick in 2011 and can expect to push for playing time this campaign. Both are more dynamic against the pass than Rogers and the 12-year pro will need to prove his value as a run anchor, or he may not survive camp.

LeGarrette Blount, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

LeGarrette Blount was rescued from the league's scrapheap by the Buccaneers in 2010 after being waived by the Tennessee Titans. His first season in Tampa Bay saw Blount eclipse the 1,000-yard mark, but after a sub-par 2011 campaign, he now faces competition from 31st overall draft pick Doug Martin.

The Boise State star offers a more explosive running style and more of a breakaway threat than Blount. More of a natural bruiser, Blount excels between the tackles, but isn't the most imaginative runner.

If Martin wins the starting job, it remains to be seen if Blount will happily take to being relegated to the bench.

Matt Moore, QB, Miami Dolphins

Similar to Jackson, Matt Moore faces a challenge to hold onto a job he won only a season ago. The Miami Dolphins added Ryan Tannehill with the eighth overall pick in the draft and the ex-Texas A&M star's familiarity with new offensive coordinator Mike Sherman could help him win the job.

The Dolphins added more insurance in the shape of former Jacksonville Jaguars starter David Garrard. Moore could find himself the odd man out in a new regime and slide down to the bottom of the depth chart.

Santana Moss, WR, Washington Redskins

Veteran pass catcher Santana Moss will see his playing time severely reduced after the Washington Redskins used free agency to boost their receiving corps. Mike Shanahan and Bruce Allen wasted little time in signing Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan once free agency began.

Both players received lucrative contracts and are expected to play key roles in a new-look passing game led by second overall draft pick Robert Grifffin III. Added to the mix is second-year player Leonard Hankerson, who should also see plenty of playing time.

Shanahan has already indicated that this youthful trio will likely be the focus of the pass offense and that means less opportunities for 33-year-old Moss. He could find himself quickly demoted from the Redskins leading receiver to the fourth wideout on the depth chart.
