Thoughts on Germany's Starting 11 for Euros and Loss to the Swiss

Samrin HasibJun 7, 2018

In a somewhat strange game, the Swiss hammered the Germans 5-3. Ottmar Hitzfeld's game plan was perfectly executed by the Swiss, who, if they had been more clinical, could have gone home with at least one more goal. For Germany, it clearly showed why Bayern, despite everything, is the heart and soul of the national team.

Joachim Loew used a bunch of youngsters in the game, including Mario Goetze. Mesut Oezil played a half. Miroslav Klose worked on his fitness levels for 70 minutes before being withdrawn. The star of the night, however, was Marco Reus. Reus' introduction in the second half saw Germany create more chances and grab one more goal. However, Reus' qualities only extend to attacking. It was at the back where the Germans were being torn apart.

Per Mertesacker lined up alongside Mats Hummels in the heart of the defence. Both, to be honest, have had better days. Hummels was especially disappointing considering just how brilliant he has been for Dortmund all season long. Marcel Schmelzer didn't have a great night, either. Benedikt Howedes, who played out of position, had a good game. I don't think Hummels has fully convinced Loew that he is the man to be picked alongside Holger Badstuber at the back.

Eren Derdiyok had a night to remember with his hat trick. The Swiss played some eye-catching football. Marc Andre ter Stegen kept one of their efforts out brilliantly in the first half. He did concede five, though he can only be blamed for two of them. Andre Schuerrle was underwhelming but scored a wonderful goal while Julian Draxler gave the Schalke fans a few things to smile about when he came on.

While a friendly is nothing to judge by, the national team didn't really look great without their Bavarians. Many friendlies for Germany have seen a lot of first-teamers benched; in those games, there were at least two or three Bayern players on the pitch, and Germany indeed won those games. Lukas Podolski really didn't have much to smile about yesterday as well.

Loew will not be happy about the back line at all. Germany has one more match prior to the Euros. They play Israel on May 31st. Loew will perhaps decide to test out both Bender brothers in that match.

So, I want to know who regular viewers of the national side feel will form the starting 11. For me, there are a few possibilities:

Manuel Neuer

Lahm- Badstuber- Mertesacker/Hummels- Boateng/Schmelzer

Schweinsteiger/Kroos- Khedira/Kroos

Mueller- Oezil- Podolski/Reus

Klose

So, let me hear your thoughts on this matter.
