UFC 146 Prelims Results: What We Learned from Kyle Kingsbury vs Glover Teixeira
UFC 146 in Las Vegas showcases the heavyweight division. However, the only light-heavyweight fight on the card saw Ultimate Fighter veteran Kyle Kingsbury square off against Glover Teixiera.
Teixiera is a highly touted prospect who fights out of The Pit and holds victories over UFC Heavyweights Ricco Rodriguez, Marcio Cruz, as well as notable light-heavyweights Sokoudjou and Marvin Eastman.
The fight lasted less than two minutes with Teixiera coming out on top after securing an arm-triangle choke.
Here's what we learned from the bout.
What we'll remember about this fight:
The name Glover Teixiera. This was one of the best debuts for any prospect. Don't be surprised if people start pointing at Teixiera as the man who will eventually challenge Jon Jones.
What we learned about Kyle Kingsbury:
That he can take a punch. The standup portion of this fight didn't last long, but Kingsbury ate several big punches from the Brazilian before finally going down.
What we learned about Glover Teixiera:
That he has enormous power and a well-rounded ground game. Kingsbury was not comfortable standing and looked frustrated in the exchanges. Teixiera knocked Kingsbury down with a big uppercut and showed brilliant jiu-jitsu when he found an arm triangle choke.
What's next for Kingsbury:
Kingsbury is an entertaining fighter who clearly enjoys putting on a show for the crowd. That could buy him another fight, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him released after two consecutive performances in which he was outmaneuvered by a more experienced opponent. Hopefully, he will face off with someone along the lines of Tom DeBlass or Cyrille Diabate.
What's next for Teixiera:
Don't be surprised to see Teixiera square off against someone else riding some hefty momentum. Igor Pokrajac is on a three-fight streak, looked strong in his last contest and that would make a good opponent stylistically. Perhaps a contest with the winner of James Te Huna vs Brandon Vera could be in order.
