WWE Superstar of the Week: Sheamus

Drake OzMay 25, 2012

Whenever someone talks about the WWE’s top stars, the same three names seem to come up: John Cena, Randy Orton and CM Punk. But I always like to add a fourth name to that list, and it’s a guy who I consider to be one of the top full-time stars in the WWE: Sheamus

Don’t believe me? Well, he’s definitely proved it over the last eight days.

While a lot of people seem to criticize Sheamus, he had a fantastic week in the ring.

On last Friday’s SmackDown, he wrestled Orton in a TV classic that lasted nearly 30 minutes. It was an excellent face versus face match between two of the WWE’s most over babyfaces, and it was one of the best TV bouts in recent memory.

It didn’t take long for Sheamus to deliver another great performance, though.

At Sunday’s Over the Limit pay-per-view, he faced Orton, Chris Jericho and Alberto Del Rio in one of the better Fatal 4-Way matches in recent memory—a match that saw Sheamus retain the World Heavyweight Championship.

Although the match followed the same formula that pretty much every Fatal 4-Way follows, all of the competitors in this match were on point, including Sheamus.

The Over the Limit bout marked his second straight quality PPV match, which means he’s 2-of-2 as World Heavyweight Champion, since that WrestleMania match didn’t really count.

And Sheamus’ hot streak would continue on this week’s Raw, when he and John Cena teamed up to take on Tensai, Jack Swagger and Dolph Ziggler in the show’s main event. The match was nothing special, but it was definitely the best match on the show, meaning that Sheamus has been involved in three of the company’s top four matches in a four-day span.

I know that not a lot of fans are crazy about Sheamus, and he’s often been called “boring” in the comments section of my articles. But I think Sheamus has really settled into a nice spot as one of the WWE’s top babyfaces, and he’s a reliable performer who delivers good matches on a really consistent basis.

In 2009, when Sheamus won his first World title, he wasn’t ready to be at the top of the WWE. But now? He’s one of the WWE’s best performers and its Superstar of the Week.
