Manny Pacquiao: Lessons Learned from Marquez Fight Will Lead to Dominant Win

Ben ChodosJun 7, 2018

Manny Pacquiao escaped with a win against Juan Manuel Marquez in his most recent fight, and the valuable experience gained in that bout will help PacMan dominate Timothy Bradley.

Pacquiao and Marquez fought for the third time on November 12, 2011. The Filipino fighter retained his welterweight title via a majority decision that upset Marquez.

Pacquiao's wife Jinkee reportedly served her husband with divorce papers just before the fight, according to the Los Angeles Times.

This left the champ lacking the focus that the fight deserved, and seemingly affected his performance.

Since the Marquez bout, Pacquiao has made drastic changes in his lifestyle.

As trainer Freddie Roach said about his highest-profile client, via the same L.A. Times report, "He's given away his cockfighting farm [in the Philippines], sold his casino and his nightclub." The article also notes that Pacquiao has mended his relationship with his wife.

Pacquiao learned the hard way how unexpected events in his personal life can negatively effect his professional fighting career. He has toned down his lifestyle and is making a renewed commitment to training.

These changes have allowed Pacquiao to focus more on his fighting career. In a recent interview with BoxingScene.com, Roach said his fighter's "timing, his distance, combinations were perfect and he threw a lot of punches today. He was very active and he could turn it on whenever he wanted. He looked really good today."

Pacquiao is much more experienced than Bradley. He knows the pressure that comes with high-profile fights, and Bradley does not.

PacMan is also the better fighter. He has 54 career wins and 38 knockouts. Bradley is 28-0, but with just 12 knockouts. Bradley may be slightly faster, but Pacquiao is still very quick with his punches.

The most considerable advantage Pacquiao has over his opponent is power, which is evidenced by the number of knockouts each fighter has in their careers.

Pacquiao should beat Bradley on June 9, but he must be mentally ready. Bradley is a good fighter who knows this may be his only shot at stardom. The challenger will be ready when the bell rings.

Pacquiao learned from the Marquez fight what can happen if he is not completely focused on the task at hand. This time around, knocking out Bradley will be the only thing on Pacquiao's mind once he steps into the ring.
