USC Football Recruiting: More Trojan Offers and How They Fit
Recently, we looked at some players who the Trojans extended offers to in the 2013 class, and how they might fit into USC's plans going forward.
Now we will continue with this theme and take a gander at some more elite prep players that USC has their eyes on for the upcoming class.
Some of these players might surprise you in that not all of them are rated as "blue chip" prospects by the major recruiting services, but obviously, with Trojan scholarships at a premium, they have been scrutinized by the only people that really matter. That is, USC's recruiting department.
Many of these players fill a need and some of them—given the success USC has already found early in this class—play positions that are no longer as critical as they once were.
Nonetheless, all of the players featured in this slideshow hold a precious offer from the men of Troy.
Here they are...
Artie Burns (Cornerback)
1 of 5The Trojans have had plenty of success recruiting in Florida and that is where you will find Artie Burns, who calls Miami home.
Burns, who has exceptional size (6'1", 190 pounds) for a cornerback, is raw but has the talent to be dominant at the next level.
The question is, with the Trojans already having received a verbal from Chris Hawkins and with a number of other defensive backs showing interest in USC, will there still be a spot when Burns makes a decision?
A 4-star prospect according to both ESPN and Scout.com, Burns holds offers from programs such as Alabama and Miami and he has no favorites at this time.
Greg Gilmore (Defensive Tackle)
2 of 5I have profiled big Greg Gilmore in other pieces, but due to the position he plays and a recent change in his status, it only seems appropriate to provide an update on the Hope Mills, NC product.
Gilmore is a highly coveted tackle who is just now starting to scratch the surface of his potential. His frame (6'4", 280 pounds) will easily accommodate the bulk needed at the next level.
Recently, the ESPN and Scout.com 4-star-rated prospect trimmed his list to five schools. USC made the cut along with Alabama, Clemson, Florida and LSU.
Gilmore's position coach is Ed Orgeron, who is perhaps the finest recruiter in the nation.
Is Gilmore this year's Leonard Williams? Would you bet against Orgeron to deliver?
Me neither.
DaJuan Drennon (Defensive End)
3 of 5Another intriguing prospect for the defensive line comes in the form of Erial, NJ's Dajuan Drennon.
Drennon, a 4-star prospect according to Scout.com, has plenty of room to pack more weight on his 6'4", 230-pound frame.
What he does have now is explosive athleticism and a knack for gobbling up ball carriers from his end position.
Drennon currently lists more than a dozen offers, including Alabama, Notre Dame and others among his suitors.
Christian Morris (Offensive Lineman)
4 of 5The Trojans know how to develop "big uglies," and in Christian Morris—who hails from Memphis TN—they think they've found a good one.
Morris, a 4-star Scout.com and 3-star ESPN prospect, has a great body (6'5", 285 pounds) and is tremendously athletic despite still being a bit raw technique-wise.
Although the offensive line is not a pressing need for the Trojans in the 2013 class, look for them to take at least one with this year's reduced allotment.
If Morris is that guy, the Trojans will have to beat out programs such as Clemson and Nebraska among many others for his services.
Rickey Jefferson (Wide Receiver)
5 of 5What would a list of prospective Trojans be without a wide receiver included among them?
For this list, that receiver is Destrehan, LA's Rickey Jefferson.
Jefferson is a well regarded wideout who has good size (6'0", 185 pounds) and speed (4.55 40-yard dash time). However, where he really excels is in finding ways to get open and making it all worthwhile by catching everything that comes his way.
