Big Ten Football Morning Coffee: Rob Bolden Is Going Nowhere
Rise and shine, friends. Here's what's going down in the Big Ten today.
-- Rob Bolden's high school position coach Dan Buchanan announced on Tuesday that Bolden was not planning on leaving Penn State, contrary to some initial reports. A high school coach may not sound like the most authoritative source for a college QB, but Buchanan was also the person who revealed Bolden would come back last season, so he's worth listening to here.
As we've written before, even if Bolden never wins the starting job, he still has plenty of reasons to stay at PSU, so this news is welcome. And hey, the guy's still got three years to play two seasons left. Maybe Bill O'Brien is the coach he always needed. We'll see.
-- Former Northwestern quarterback Dan Persa is going back under the knife after re-injuring his surgically-repaired Achilles tendon during a Tampa Bay Buccaneers workout. Adam Kramer wishes Persa well through gritted teeth over at Your Best 11, and while we still maintain that you underestimate Persa at your own peril, the "get well soon" sentiment might be all you can offer anymore.
-- Michigan State terrormonster Will Gholston is profiled here by Bruce Feldman at CBSSports.com. If all you know about Gholston is "took a swing at Taylor Lewan," you've got so much to learn. He's a deep, complex, guarded person, and one nice enough to warrant an unsolicited letter from a fan to the Michigan State athletic department complimenting him after she met him at an event. Read up.
-- ESPN.com rates the three biggest coaching villains in the Big Ten, and of course Bret Bielema tops the list. Something about hanging 83 on hapless Indiana will do that. I wish college football had an actual, Lex Luthor-type villain in its coaching ranks, though. Like, he's building a giant laser aimed at the sun, but he insists its for research purposes. And he lives in a lair. That's what we want, not a guy who goes for two when he's up by 25.
-- Big Brothers Big Sisters named Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio its Mentor of the Year in the Michigan Capital region. Hey, Big Brothers Big Sisters is a great organization. You should check them out.
