Stock Up, Stock Down for Every Miami Dolphins Rookie After Minicamp

Scott AltmanJun 7, 2018

The Miami Dolphins completed its first organized team activity (OTA) practice today, and all eyes were focused on Ryan Tannehill and the 2012 draft class.

Following today's practice and rookie camp—which occurred earlier this month—we finally have a glimpse at how each rookie will fit into Miami's game plan, and how they're transitioning to the NFL

Which rookies are excelling and which are struggling?

Here's a look.

Stock Up: Ryan Tannehill

1 of 9

Nobody's stock is soaring higher than Ryan Tannehill's.

He already knows approximately 85 percent of Miami's playbook, and he slung a 60-yard touchdown pass to sixth round pick B.J. Cunningham in his first OTA practice.

Tannehill is generating buzz at Dolphins camp, but it's important that everybody tempers their expectations. He's still a very raw, very inexperienced rookie, but it's exciting to see him succeed and show NFL poise this early on.

Stock Down: Jonathan Martin

2 of 9

Jonathan Martin hasn't done anything wrong, nor has he done anything poorly.

The problem is, he hasn't done anything at all.

Martin hasn't graduated from Stanford yet. Don't worry, he didn't fail. Andrew Luck is still there, too.

Per NFL rules, Martin cannot practice until he does so. This isn't a huge concern, but there's no doubt the Dolphins want Martin at camp, especially because he'll be competing for a starting job.

Stock Up: Lamar Miller

3 of 9

Behind Ryan Tannehill, Lamar Miller is easily the most hyped rookie at the Dolphins' camp.

Miller, who is still nursing a shoulder injury he suffered last year, hasn't done much on the field, but his uncanny athleticism has inspired the coaching staff's imagination.

"There's a chance down the road, as Lamar gets acclimated, that he might be able to spread himself a ways as a receiver to a certain degree," Joe Philbin said via Dave George of the Palm Beach Post.

"I'm not saying make a full position change, but I think there's some flexibility with what you can do with the guy."

Stock Down: Josh Kaddu

4 of 9

Like Jonathan Martin, Josh Kaddu still hasn't graduated, and he won't arrive at the Dolphins' camp until he does so.

The Dolphins are so thin at pass rusher that Kaddu might see a fair amount of playing time this season, so his absence hurts.

Kaddu is still raw, and he needs all of the practice reps and polishing possible. Hopefully he doesn't miss too much time.

Stock Up: B.J. Cunningham

5 of 9

Thus far, sixth-round pick B.J. Cunningham has made two noteworthy plays.

At rookie camp, B.J. Cunningham couldn't hold on to a Ryan Tannehill pass, and it was intercepted by undrafted free agent Vincent Agnew.

But, Cunningham redeemed himself as Miami's first OTA session, taking a Tannehill slant pass 60 yards to the house.

Cunningham is the biggest sleeper in Miami's draft class. He has the potential to become a productive NFL wide receiver, and, assuming drops don't become a recurring issue, might earn a significant role this season.

Stock Down: Rishard Matthews

6 of 9

Seventh-round pick Rishard Matthews has the size and speed to succeed in the NFL, but he didn't display NFL hands in Tuesday's OTA practice.

Matthews dropped a "deep, catchable" pass from Ryan Tannehill, and later dropped a slant pass.

It's only one practice, so there's no reason to overreact. But, Matthews can't drop passes if he wants to make the team and become a legitimate NFL wideout.

Stock Up: Michael Egnew

7 of 9

Michael Egnew hasn't done much on the field, but Izzy Gould of the Sun Sentinel dug up some nuggets that boosts his stock.

"I ran against [Ryan Tannehill] in high school, played him in football," Egnew told Gould.

This isn't earth-shattering news, but Egnew also told Gould that he roomed with Tannehill during rookie camp.

Egnew and Tannehill already have some intimate familiarity, and if they continue developing a close bond, it could translate to success on the field.

Stock Neutral: Olivier Vernon

8 of 9

I wish I could give a stock report on Olivier Vernon, but he hasn't cracked any headlines quite yet.

This isn't unusual for a rookie defensive end and linebacker. While skill players can flash their talent during rookie camp and OTAs, we won't get to see Vernon strut his stuff until contract drills begin.

Vernon could play a major role this season, and he's one of the players worth monitoring over the next few months.

Stock Neutral: Kheeston Randall

9 of 9

Seventh-round pick Kheeston Randall, like Olivier Vernon, won't get an opportunity to display his skills until contract drills begin.

Randall's ability to rotate between defensive end and defensive tackle makes him an intriguing prospect.

The Dolphins are thin at defensive tackle, so if Randall performs well over the next few months, he could crack the rotation in the regular season.
