College Football Recruiting 2013: The Top Uncommitted Recruits on Defense
All right folks, we've looked at the top committed and uncommitted recruits on offense, while also examining the top committed defensive recruits.
Today, we'll finish up the series with looking at the defensive board yet again and listing the top uncommitted recruit at each position. Looking at this list, I really think if I had these guys at these positions, I wouldn't get scored on at all.
Just shows you how much talent is on this list. Come inside and see who they are!
DT: Montravius Adams
1 of 8Montravius Adams is a 6'3" DT that weighs nearly 290 pounds and hails from the great state of Georgia. He's very explosive at the snap and has flashes of being a hand fighter.
Adams shows that when he wants to play with a flat back, low pad level and good leverage, he has excellent strength. He's a bit raw in his technique, but his athleticism, size and explosion all make his ceiling high.
My gut tells me that right now, he'll likely trip to LSU, USC, Oregon, Michigan State and TCU.
DE: Robert Nkemdiche
2 of 8Nkemdiche can play DT or rush end, but his general spot is DE, so I'm listing him here. Of course we know that he's the No. 1 prospect in the country and stands at 6'5" and weighs in at 270 pounds.
He's a heck of a talent and just dominates at this level of competition. Nkemdiche may be the best prospect in the modern recruiting era.
Nkemdiche recently told Scout.com that his top schools are Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, Florida, Clemson and Georgia.
Rush End: Matthew Thomas
3 of 8I'd love to have Matthew Thomas as my stand-up, hybrid OLB/rush end. He goes in the 6'4", 210-pound range, has excellent length, snap quickness, athleticism, strength and a burst to finish on the passer.
Thomas is also athletic enough to deploy back into coverage and use his length to bat down balls. His speed gives him good range and he's solid in pursuit.
Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Miami and Georgia are his top five.
OLB: Michael Hutchings
4 of 8Hutchings is a hybrid OLB/SS prospect, and he fits well at both spots. He's 6'1", 210 pounds on the hoof, and has the makings of a great defender.
Hutchings plays with solid instincts, moves well laterally, shows great range, has speed in pursuit and doesn't like to get caught in traffic. He's at his space on the flanks, where he can make plays for his defense.
USC leads, but Oregon and Arizona State will get visits.
MLB: Jaylon Smith
5 of 8I know, I know, Jaylon Smith is more of an OLB prospect. But I wanted to try to get the best players possible on this list, and this is where the Indiana native fits best for this one.
Smith stands 6'3", 225 pounds, and has great athleticism. In fact, he may be the best cover LB in the country this year. He shows good vision to locate the ball, solid instincts and can factor well versus the pass.
Notre Dame, Ohio State, Purdue and Indiana are his top four.
SS: Antonio Conner
6 of 8I really have been high on Conner since the jump. He's 6'2" and 200 pounds, and is a playmaker from the back end.
Seeing him play with great instincts versus the run, quickly reading plays, stepping on the gas and flying up to attack the ball-carrier, he has the traits of a great strong safety at the next level.
He also shows great athleticism and speed to develop well versus the pass. He'll need to get more canny at recognizing route combos and playing in a deep zone, but he has the tools to become solid in those aspects as well.
FS: Su'a Cravens
7 of 8Cravens could just as easily play and be the best SS or OLB on this list, as he could at FS. He also could be a great college RB or WR.
At 6'1" and 205 pounds, Cravens is a natural athlete with easy agility and change-of-direction skills. He has outstanding ball skills and speed, and will mix it up with anyone.
Cravens is very versatile, and it'll be interesting to see where he ends up playing his college ball.
USC, Michigan, UCLA, Ohio State and Nebraska are his top five.
CB: Vernon Hargreaves III
8 of 8Vernon Hargreaves is the top corner prospect in the land and stands 5'10", 185 pounds. He's from Florida, so he has played against good competition and speed in his prep career.
Hargreaves has average size, yet his instincts, technique and smarts are what set him over the top. He can play off-man and zone well, reads routes, times 'em up and is quick out of transition to jump a route.
