Preakness Results: I'll Have Another Must Change Style to Complete Triple Crown
I'll Have Another is so close to winning the Triple Crown that the three-year-old thoroughbred can taste it. His latest triumph at the Preakness was nearly a carbon copy of his victory at the Kentucky Derby, and now all of the focus will turn to the Belmont Stakes in three weeks.
In case you missed it, I'll Have Another was trailing Bodemeister down the final stretch once again. Another made a charge right after the turn and was able to get his neck past Bodemeister right at the finish line.
It was a thrilling finish to a Triple Crown season that is shaping up to be one of the best in recent memory. But there is still one more race that will determine I'll Have Another's legacy, and it is the most difficult of the three races.
The Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes will feel like cakewalks compared to the Belmont. The final leg of the Triple Crown is a 1.5-mile oval that tests the stamina and speed of all the horses who enter.
I'll Have Another has been using a style that bodes well for him heading into the Belmont, but there are certain things that he will have to change in order to complete the first Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978.
First, jockey Mario Gutierrez must resist the urge to push I'll Have Another too quickly. Gutierrez hasn't gotten the credit he deserves, but he has been the difference for this horse in these races. He understands when to pull back and when to push through.
With Gutierrez likely feeling the pressure of this race, he could be tempted to push his horse much sooner than he should. Let the track dictate the pace Another runs, not the spotlight of the Triple Crown.
The other big key for I'll Have Another in this race is keeping it simple. Everything around him is going to be magnified by 1,000 as the race approaches. His trainer and jockey must do what they can to keep things normal.
Keeping Another on a regular routine and away from the cameras and videos is going to make him feel more at ease when he steps on the track at Belmont Park, giving him the edge he needs to complete his journey towards immortality.
