WWE Over the Limit 2012: Why We Need More Christian vs. Cody Rhodes

Michael PrunkaJun 6, 2018

At WWE Over the Limit, Christian made his long awaited return to competition in the People’s Power Battle Royal. He went on to win the match and earn himself a shot at Cody Rhodes’ Intercontinental Championship. In his first match back from injury, Christian defeated Rhodes via pinfall to win the Intercontinental Championship. After that brief taste, I think I speak for a lot of us when I say that we need more from these two.

Rhodes, borrowing a line from Brock Lesnar, claimed that he was returning legitimacy to the Intercontinental Championship. But what exactly has he done that backs up that claim? He had a brief feud with Big Show in which the two traded the belt over the course of two consecutive pay-per-views. That hardly brought legitimacy to the title.

If anything, the only thing Rhodes has done recently to return legitimacy to the title was his feud with Booker T in December 2011. Rhodes would successfully defend the title against the veteran and former world champion.

Not only would a lengthy program between Christian and Rhodes do wonders for the credibility of the Intercontinental Championship, but it would also be great for all those involved. Before losing the championship, Rhodes didn’t exactly have people lining up in the locker room to challenge him. Christian would be the perfect person to occupy Rhodes for the summer.

In addition, Christian could be Rhodes’ ticket to getting consistent PPV exposure throughout the summer months. On top of that, Christian’s star power would help Rhodes get a higher spot on those PPV cards. Rhodes did well when he was a contender for the World Heavyweight Championship at the Elimination Chamber PPV in February. If the WWE would like to continue to ease Rhodes into the main event, matches between him and Christian in the upper midcard would be ideal.

Christian, on the other hand, may very well be beginning his last run as an active competitor. He hasn’t had an extended return to action since suffering an injury in late November. Re-aggravating the injury caused his return to be delayed. At 38 years old, Christian is a bad injury or two from having to hang up his boots.

That said, this is an ideal time for Christian to help establish someone like Cody Rhodes. Christian, especially as a babyface, is in a league of his own when he’s in the mic. The same could be said for his work in the ring. The promos and matches between Rhodes and Christian could be feud of the year material.

That, more than anything, is why we need more matches from these two. Cody Rhodes has a very traditional feel to his look and the way he wrestles and Christian can put on an amazing match with just about anyone. I don’t think I’m the only one that just selfishly wants an extended feud between these two.
