Penn State Football: 5 Lions Poised to Break Out in 2012
Penn State already has star players in Silas Redd, Gerald Hodges and Michael Mauti. Other than these players, who will break out in 2012?
Several players will fill new roles under Penn State's new coaching staff. These new roles could lead to bigger production and a spot in the limelight.
Let's take a look at which Nittany Lions are poised for a breakout season in 2012.
Shawney Kersey
1 of 5Shawney Kersey will benefit from Devon Smith's questionable future (via AOL Sporting News) in 2012.
Kersey is a fast receiver who will likely see time in the slot for the Nittany Lions.
He has solid hands, but he must work on his discipline and route-running. Kersey's speed and elusiveness neutralizes these shortcomings just enough.
Kersey will have a big year this year because of Penn State's new offense and Smith's situation. He has a lot of talent and will make Penn State fans pay attention next year.
Look for Kersey to line up as Penn State's No. 3 or No. 2 target before too long.
Malcolm Willis
2 of 5Malcolm Willis enters Penn State's 2012 season as their starting strong safety.
Willis is a two-way threat, capable defending the run or the pass. He has starting experience in the past, but this will be the first time he enters a season with an unquestioned role.
Penn State needs Willis to be a leader on the back end of their defense. He is an upperclassmen who has been around the program. Defensive coordinator Ted Roof needs Willis to maintain organization and make sound decisions.
Willis has great ability and athleticism. He is a capable playmaker due for a breakout season.
Look for Willis to realize his upside this season as Penn State's starter.
Bill Belton
3 of 5Bill Belton's transition from wide receiver to running back will be very smooth this season.
Belton's speed will immediately replace Stephfon Green's presence in the Nittany Lion backfield. Belton is a versatile player capable of lining up all over the field. He will see snaps from the backfield, in the slot or possibly as a Wildcat quarterback.
Penn State will need every weapon they can get on offense this year, and Belton will develop into one of their most dangerous players.
Adrian Amos
4 of 5Adrian Amos' shift to safety is not supposed to be permanent yet, but it should be. Amos played safety in high school and will excel there for the Nittany Lions.
Amos played some last year while D'Anton Lynn was out with an injury. He played hard, showed good ball skills and the ability to tackle in the box.
Moving Amos to his natural position is better for everyone.
Amos will be the unquestioned starter as Penn State's Hero defensive back, and he will be able to roam the field making plays.
Penn State's secondary is their biggest defensive concern. Expect Amos to help rectify that concern early on.
Jordan Hill
5 of 5Jordan Hill's 59 total tackles last year could negate his spot on this list, but Hill will be even better this year.
Hill spent his time last year holding the line and letting Devon Still shed blocks. Now, Hill will be expected to shed blocks.
Hill's explosiveness and strength at the point of attack creates a lot of problem for opposing offensive lines. He disrupts plays in the backfield, and he has the speed to chase ball-carriers down from behind.
Penn State needs Hill to emerge as their leader on the defensive line. Hill's talent and prior production point to a huge season in 2012.
Look for Hill to be one of the Big Ten's best defensive lineman next season.
