5-Star RB Justin Davis Commits to USC: What This Means for Trojan Football
This has been a fantastic week for the Trojans, as they learned they got a commitment from Ty Isaac, the 5-star RB from Joilet (Ill.).
To top it off, the Trojans finished the week with another bang, as 5-star RB Justin Davis of Stockton Lincoln (Ca.) committed to USC on Thursday night.
I'm here to quickly analyze the commitment of Davis and what a pledge like this means for the USC program going forward. Come inside and check it out!
Who Is Justin Davis?
1 of 5According to Scout.com, Davis is a 5-star RB prospect and the No. 18 overall prospect.
Rivals.com lists Davis as a 4-star prospect and No. 48 overall.
ESPNU lists Davis as a 4-star RB and at an 82 grade.
Davis got on the national recruiting radar as s sophomore, when he rushed for 1,316 yards and 20 touchdowns for Stockton Lincoln High School in central California.
As a junior, all he did was simply run for 2,613 yards and 39 touchdowns, earning him consecutive All-State honors.
Davis is viewed as the best RB in California for 2013.
Justin Davis Evaluation
2 of 5I've seen Davis listed in the as tall as 6'1" and as much as 197 pounds. Based on seeing him on tape, it's safe to say he goes about 6'0" and just south of 200 pounds per what my eyes tell me.
Davis looks like a glider to me, as he has smooth athleticism. His size and solid run strength allow him to be a more than willing inside runner to which he can get it done between the tackles. He shows some strength and leg drive to push piles and can run through arm tackles.
Davis has solid foot quickness and jump cut ability, which allows him to skate to the edges of the box on the outside. He shows good speed, an above-average burst and great elusiveness in space.
Commitment to USC
3 of 5Davis chose USC over Cal and Washington as his finalists, per Scout.com.
According to Scout.com, Davis actually committed over three weeks ago, but wanted more colleges to come by his school so his teammates would get more exposure.
Davis is USC's seventh commitment, and per Scout.com, he becomes their fourth 5-star prospect in the class.
Tandem with Ty Isaac
4 of 5USC came into this cycle in dire need of running backs, and now, they have landed two of the nation's elite runners in the past week.
Ty Isaac is a 6'2", 220-pounder from Illinois that, even though he's large for a back, has better speed than Davis. Isaac also has superior hands and can factor heavily in the passing game.
Look for Davis to be the inside the tackles guy, pounding it inside and getting to the edges some. Isaac will be likely be the more dynamic of the two since his size, speed and hands are all excellent.
Who's Next for USC?
5 of 5The Trojans aren't done; at least that's how it appears. With Texas, Florida, Alabama and Michigan doing outstanding, USC needs to keep at it to keep pace with the big boys.
Prime potential and remaining targets likely include:
ATH Su'a Cravens, LB Michael Hutchings, CB Vernon Hargreaves III, DT Montravius Adams, DT Eddie Vanderdoes, DB Max Redfield, DB Priest Willis, DB Tahaan Goodman, WR Darrell Daniels, OT Nico Falah, LB Alex Anzalone and CB Johnny Johnson among others.
Edwin Weathersby has worked in scouting/player personnel departments for three professional football teams, including the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns and the Las Vegas Gladiators of the Arena League. He spent a year evaluating prep prospects and writing specific recruiting and scouting content articles for Student Sports Football (now ESPN Rise-HS). A syndicated scout and writer, he's also contributed to WeAreSC.com, GatorBait.net and Diamonds in the Rough Inc., a College Football and NFL draft magazine.
