Preakness 2012 Replay: Watch I'll Have Another Pull off Amazing Comeback Win

Sam R. QuinnJun 7, 2018

The 137th Preakness Stakes saw a race eerily similar to the Kentucky Derby, resulting in I'll Have Another pulling off his second come-from-behind win as he was able to track down odds favorite Bodemeister over the final 200 yards.

I'm not the biggest fan of thoroughbred racing, but the Preakness was the most exciting two minutes of my Saturday (sans the Rangers two goals in two minutes).

Now I'll Have Another has a chance to win the Triple Crown against all odds. On June 9 in Elmont, New York at the Belmont Stakes, the three-year-old chestnut colt will be looking to accomplish a feat that hasn't been seen since 1978.

Jockey Mario Gutierrez seems to know his horse better than any other rider in the field, and it really showed on Saturday under the hot sun in Baltimore. He let I'll Have Another hang back behind Bodemeister and a few others until the stretch, when he made a furious charge.

With one furlong left, it appeared that the Doug O'Neill-trained horse did not have enough left in the tank to catch Bodemeister for a second time, but I'll Have Another shut the doubters up again and shocked the horse racing world.

The amount of calculation and strategy that must be involved in a jockey knowing exactly when to start pushing his horse toward the finish is something that I cannot wrap my head around.

Watch I'll Have Another shock the horse racing world yet again at Pimlico Race Course.

This isn't like a baseball manager knowing how far his pitcher can go into the game, it's something totally different. In baseball, the manager can actually talk to his pitcher and feel him out. In horse racing the jockey just has to know. They have to have this special bond with the horse that nobody but the rider and the animal can realize.

The Preakness victory was I'll Have Another's fourth in as many starts, solidifying him as one of the top horses in all of racing.

Is it time to concede that this horse is going to win the Triple Crown and end a 34-year drought that has deprived racing fans of the most impressive accomplishment in the sport? Or will we just keep doubting I'll Have Another's ability to close out races?

I think the answer lies somewhere in the middle of those two questions. Not only do we have to pull for I'll Have Another to cross the finish line first at Belmont Park, but we have to expect that it will happen now that I'll Have Another's main competition, Bodemeister, has pulled out of the June 9 race.
